Thoughts on Quick Fists and Shovel Mounting

It seems that lots like those Fiskars hatchets and axes.

While they are nice, a word of caution...

I sell those at my work, and EVERY winter I get a pile of them returned as defective with broken handles.

They simply cannot survive cold weather usage. The handles shatter.

I myself was planning on a complete set of Fiskars gear as I love the light weight and good feel of them, but the cold weather problems turned me away. Wood handles for me.

Fortunately I don't have to worry about that kind of cold at my latitude, but I gotta ask... WTH was someone using their Fiskars shovel for that made that hollow steel handle shatter?

I'd like to see some pictures of that carnage. :Wow1:

I have mine vertically mounted on my roll cage. No fear of it letting go but it doesn't hold as snug as I would like. I could crank it down another notch but I would be really reefing on it to do so. I also wish there was more meat in the base as the shovel tip touches the cage and rattles at times. I stuck some foam in there but that's a pretty shoddy solution. I would turn the shovel the other way but its worse that way.

I will likely shim the quick fists out a bit. But it will still slowly work its way down till the tip hits the floor. Minor annoyance for an otherwise simple and ingenious solution for mounting.

I think he was talking about a hatchet/axe and based on that my WAG would be chopping wood for a fireplace? ;)

Yes, most are hatchets and axes that come back with broken handles.

Though I have had a couple of shovels too. Handles suffer the same fate in the cold. A bit of prying seems to do it in extreme cold.

seems like people need to be storing there Fiskars axes inside and out of the cold i guess. Also I feel bad for the guy using a shovel when its cold enough to freeze the handle, not to mention the ground must be frozen.

Hi

The Fiskars are made for the Swedish climate and should work down to at least 30 below (celsius). Are you sure that its the material that broke or is it possible that the one holding it might be careless? Where did they break?

I don't own one but was on my to-do list.
