Thanks @RAM5500 CAMPERTHING ! Yes, on the phone with CARB trying to figure it out. Some of the verbiage said 2010 or newer. Maybe there's an opportunity through exclusion for RV use, might be a short term solution. I think it sais that it might be ok if converted to RV use until 2023, at which point a 2010 engine swap out is necessary. Still digging into this.

Ok. Just got off the phone. Step 1: make sure dmv will approve rv conversion step 2: go through CARB for low use exception, 1k miles max. Step 3: build out the rv step 4: fill out the excluded diesel vehicle report form . Done

AAA, Auto Club of So Cal doesn't handle ANY out of State transactions, hence, the hassle of waiting in line at DMV (they are NOT taking appointments)
Interesting. I was basing my experience of trying to register my 2007 Ram bought from Dave Smith Motors at AAA. They said they can do used but not new.

That statement is literally 100% false

I have personally registered 7 (4 motorcycles and 3 trucks) out of state vehicles at AAA of So Cal.

Clairemont mesa branch to be specific.

Always a very painless experience

Actually you both are right. I have been in both shoes of dealing with out of state vehicle registrations and using AAA. Went through this when purchasing both of my M1010's and Ram truck.

IF you bought the vehicle out of state from a PRIVATE party, AAA will be more than happy to work with you.

IF you bought the vehicle out of state from a DEALER, AAA cannot help you and you must go to the DMV.

Also note: If you buy a truck from out of state, you must get it weighed and have the certificate before either can do anything for you. Found that out the hard way the first time....

What Expo Mike said is spot on

I use a lady here and pay her service fee so I dont have to go to the DMV in San Diego. Her office is in Coronado.

I bought in Nevada a 2002 or so F350 7.3 4x4 dually crew cab at a dealership.

It was once registered in CA before. Therefore I didnt have to weigh it at a station. I did have to smog it. Which no catalyst, the tech smogging it said they just check for illegal tunes that are non CARB compliant.

I think you have to have it smogged too just like when selling it.

That's the one I use. If you buy their AAA club towing service be sure and get the RV coverage if you have a camper on it. I found that out the hard way when I had to have my Ram with popup camper on it towed. I have Premier which paid of when our Pilot was involved in an accident and had to be towed from Banning to San Diego. No charge and I gave the driver a $20 tip.

agree, we use the AAA office for almost everything. only have to go to DMV for DL issues. which in this little town is no big deal anyway.

i bought my 2012 GXV out in Texas. brought it to dmv with sales slip and weight ticket. she looked under the hood to make sure it had all the right stickers on it ( 50 state truck) and away i went. after paying CA sales tax of course :(. not sure how you get out of that one. guess you could lie about the purchase price but if caught the fine might out way the saving or worse they take my dream truck.

For those 1998 and newer if diesel and 1976 and new if gas. All 3 rigs I bought from out of state were '97 or earlier diesel so no smog needed. :)
I know a diesel mechanic which helped a guy with a '98 12v evade smog. A few vin #'s made up to a point in '97 were able to avoid it while being called '98's.

Good info...

NOTE: All my out of state transfers and such have been PRIVATE, i did not know about that Dealer stipulation, thanks for sharing Mike
