and another good one.

This is great! He's awesome:)
I really would have chosen SD out of the options, but he makes very valid points against that idea.
K, maybe I'm goofy.. but please someone tell me that his dog wandering in and out of view doesn't put a smile on your face:)
Thanks passed him along this path online but didn't go down the road. It's a treasure chest

CA major cities are cracking down on out of state plates on RVs seen in town on the street over 30 days. Especially if COVID becomes a problem. The van life thing is a bit over blown these days.

CA law is if your in CA ie living in CA 30 days you need to register your car in CA. The electronic tolls have further pushed this law enforcement in recent years. Why not just live where you want to register the vehicle?

California law only requires you to transfer your registration and get a license if you become a California resident. You can legally spend up to 6 months a year visiting California and not change your plates or license, just don’t become a resident of California and maintain a residence in your home state.

Due to Covid you can extend this indefinitely due to medical conditions.

The electronic tolls are not an issue you can avoid them easily. I have yet to encounter any tolls in the truck lanes of the interstate highway system in California. The only toll I have paid in recent years was bridge tolls in the Bay Area.

The cameras at the point of entry are what they can use.

******** California DMV and bringing ANY out of State vehicle made after 1975...DON'T DO IT! Do NOT think about it, unless you want to subject yourself to DMV HELL... Even buying a motorcycle out of State and bringing it to CA is a nightmare.

What are you talking about?

I have registered multiple out of state vehicles in CA. Way back they were charging you a $300 smog fee for bringing a federal vehicle into CA but that ended decades ago and I was refunded every smog fee I paid plus interest. Lately all they have required is a title (I have actually used a bill of sale) , vin verification and verification of federal emissions sticker, payment of sales tax or evidence it was paid where it was purchased.

The treatment you get varies by office and even person in the office.

If you have the paperwork filled out, supporting documents, and if necessary vehicle code sections it’s not to bad.

The best one was when I forced them to waive $15,386 in back fees and got a truck registered.

I bought my Ram in Idaho and brought it here. No problem registering it. If it's used, get it weighed and smogged if applicable go to AAA with paperwork. Pay your fees and you're done. No DMV necessary.

AAA, Auto Club of So Cal doesn't handle ANY out of State transactions, hence, the hassle of waiting in line at DMV (they are NOT taking appointments)

They have changed the appointment system for the better. You no longer make an appointment for a fixed time. Now you fill all of the paperwork out online, scan or photograph graph your documents. Upload them and get a receipt then go to dmv. Walk up to the appointment line and hand them the receipt and it’s just like an appointment.

Today I was in and out of dmv in 40 minutes

And I was dreading going to dmv but there new system also allows a lot of stuff to be done on line or by the mail

Not true. I buy vehicles out of state often. #1 it must meet used car status meaning it must have over 7000 miles on it. However! You can buy new out of state if your replacing a similar vehicle while on a trip. What you can’t do is drive a $400 junk yard car to Oregon and return with a loaded F150, you’ll face sales tax penalties. If you go to Oregon with your 10 yr old F150 and get hit by a Oregon school bus driven by a driver on drugs, yeah you can return with a new F150 from Oregon.

Can you go to Medford and buy a new car to avoid CA taxes? No! Can you go buy a old barn find with 12,000 miles on it? Yes!

Can you get tickets for not having a CA plate after being parked in a location over 30 days? Hell yes! It’s on you to prove that you actually live elsewhere 6months out of the yr.Several neighbors do this all of them have been caught not meeting the requirements via court and not having evid

same here lots of out of state vehicle buys. Only snag is new is considered under 7000 miles. You need a replacement case ie my F150 was hit by a bus in Corvalis Or so I bought a new one to get home. You can’t drive a $400 junk yard car subaru to Oregon and come home to CA in a new 911 lol. That won’t fly you’ll be paying CA taxes on it?.

Hey everyone. New to this group. I have an opportunity to get a kodiak 2008 c5500 4x4 . With the new changes and the need to pass C.A.R.B. Can I still register this in CA? If so, whats the process before buying? Thanks in advance.

I wish San Diego would crack down on more shantytown on wheels units. We have several mobile skid rows here with vehicles with all colors of plates.

You would have to look at current laws but I believe in California, as long as the emissions are intact, it is the engine that came in the vehicle, it is over a certain number of miles and it passes their Diesel smog check you shouldn't have any issues.

I know there’s a cut off year for commercial vehicle diesels that simply can’t be registered in CA anymore, period.

It screwed over a lot of folks in the construction world.

Thanks @RAM5500 CAMPERTHING ! Yes, on the phone with CARB trying to figure it out. Some of the verbiage said 2010 or newer. Maybe there's an opportunity through exclusion for RV use, might be a short term solution. I think it sais that it might be ok if converted to RV use until 2023, at which point a 2010 engine swap out is necessary. Still digging into this.
