So the Montero has a better approach and departure for those of you who are not familiar with these.

It may take time and you'll have to be very lucky to find a Gen 3 - 3.5 that is as well maintained, and you'll have to get to know your new truck and it's habits. Having gone from an '01 Sport to a very well maintained Gen 3.5, I can say I do like the idea of the 3.5 over the Sport. What leaves me thinking about the Sport is the simplicity and feel of the 4x4 system, like you would get with a third gen XLS - LSD, 4 speed, mechanically-controlled 4WD.

I dislike the nanny features in my 2003 Limited, and I do not like using the sportronic shift to engine brake. Where the sport would power through 8" of snow with it's tight rear diff, with very predictable steering, the G3.5 is chattery and seems to fight me. I would seriously consider trading what I have for a very clean Sport like I once had - and this sport I liked so much had 242k miles on it, moderately maintained, and still gets driven hard every day by it's new owner.

Better still, I'd also trade for a supremely maintained and modified 2002 G3 XLS in black, blue or white.

clmrt, glad someone else has similar feelings with the Gen 3. I'd trade mine for a low milage one owner 1999-2000 Montero in an instant, but those are more rare than my one owner 2005.

You got my opinion on my FS post....so you have a idea where I stand.

You really need to see what your future and eventually needs and use of the Sport or whatever vehicle you decide to go with. Someone previously made a good point on if you decide to go with a new truck, what maintanance and repairs you will need to do to it unless its previous owner did everything and its in great mechanical running condition...definitely something to consider.

I loved my Sport..but in the near future it wasn't going to fit my needs, so I made a decision to part ways with it. Also when I was shopping for a Mitsu SUV, I really wanted a Gen 2 but couldn't find a decent one 4 years ago and due to a time crunch of needed a replacement vechicle as my daily, I looked for a Sport instead. I didn't regret it..I loved my Sport, but every now and then I still wanted a Gen 2.5.

Withi Aisin hubs I was also able to permanently lock the front diff actuator and by pass the electric solenoids so my 4wd system is a super simple traditional setup. I do think it readily has another 100k trouble free miles in it. Heck it doesn't even have valve seal leaks like most 6g74s....maybe since it's always had good oil change religiously.

Consensus seems to be that I'm not over thinking this but leaning towards keeping it.

We all want capability in our rigs but if a vehicle is not going to get you back, then its ability to get you there in the first place is a moot point. Sounds like yours is high in the reliability dept because of the way you‘ve maintained it. That would be a pretty strong consideration for keeping IMHO.

Keep it !!!! It's the perfect rig for you from the sounds of things. Get an off-road trailer if you want :). But as soon as it's gone you will regret it !
