Tire Mounted Trash Can

Ever since I bought my 4wd I have been trying to come up with a good way to handle the trash I find on the trails and the Wag Bags that me & my PETT (porta-potty) create. I think I am on to something interesting and with my upcoming 5000 mile 22 day adventure from Canada to Mexico there ought to be plenty of time to test things out.

The basic idea is just a big metal ammo type military can with a nice clamp on weather proof and more importantly odor & ant proof lid. Then I took 3 u-bolts a drill and a couple of rachet straps to make it all strong & secure.

The nice thing about this size can is that off the vehicle it is a great size for a camp trashcan also.

cheap too!!
can $20
u-bolts $5
rachet straps $10
so under $40 and I will report how it works soon

On one trip I strapped a large mesh bag to the spare tire on my RAV4. The bag was intended for use by white-water people, as place to store things that needed to dry out. I carried a few things like wet tarps and garbage that I did not want inside. The downside was that everything in it go dusty after driving gravel roads.

I have a korean army duffle bag made of heavy duty nylon. I triple bag it with contractor grade garbage bag. I strap it to a tree at camp and then to the tire similar to your set up for transport

For many years I have used a simple burlap sack, added a couple of grommets for bungie cords, and lined the sack with a heavy duty plastic trash bag. The burlap sack is strapped to my spare, and the trash bag is thrown in a proper receptacle whenever one is encountered. One burlap sack lasts for years, and costs about $1 to replace (usually available at bait/tackle shops). The advantage to this over a large ammo can is that empty bags take up no room (I keep several folded up under the front seat).

Human waste is another story. I need to buy a PETT toilet (space saving considerations), and will need something to carry the used bags until they can be dumped. My thought is to get an ammo can for this to reduce the risk of spillage and odor.

We got the "two" system. Nonsmelly goes wherever there is a stashspot inside the truck. Smelly gets bagged in heavy ziplocks, plus a heavy trashbag, then bungied inside the spare. Places where its not legal to go catholeing, I will carry a (horsesupplement) bucket and lid on the bumper for the wacbags. Prewacbags, used to carry the portapotty on the bumper, it keeps people from following too close.
