Tire recomendations

I may be in the market for new tires coming up shortly. I have been thinking about three different tires, if you feel i am missing something feel free to let me know.

These will be going on my '85 4runner. I'm looking for something that will have good road manners as well as off-road aggressiveness. needs to work well on snow, ice, rocks, wet pavement, and have decent tire life. looking for something right around a 33x10.50. whether it's a standard size or something in the 255-85, or 275-85. I'm moving away from my 33x12.50 MT/Rs. which are great off-road but are terrible on road.

1st up: BFG MT's

Pro's- tried an true. i've heard good things about them as long as you sipe the center blocks. long wear good off-road traction, pretty decent sidewalls. come in the sizes i listed.

Con's- BFG is a big name which means big price tag. Require some modification to get good street manors.

2nd: Cooper STT's

Pro's- I've had cooper tires before they seamed to do pretty good although i wasn't able to get a real long test of them. But cooper always seams to construct a pretty decent tire. These tires from the reviews i've read seam to have good road manors and are pretty quiet. The tread pattern looks pretty similar to my MT/R's which would be great for trails.

Con's- The sidewalls aren't quite as strong. Haven't heard nearly as many people running this so a little unsure about how it will do overall.

3rd: BFG AT's

Pro's- i've had these tires before in the 35x12.50 variety. They did very well on the street and ice and snow. good tread life. can find a good deal used. and come easily in the sizes listed.

Con's- Not quite as aggressive as i'd like. my MT/Rs are far superior on the trails here in colo. Side walls are OK. when i had my 35's these tires acted more like balloons. and didn't like to conform to rocks very well

4th- ???

If you think there is a better tire out there that will suit my needs feel free to list your recommendation.

I've had Bridgestone REVO's and they are excellent on the road. Very smooth and quiet. Does well in snow and mud (for an AT tire). Get the LT load rating if you're doing a lot of off roading.

For my next set, I'm going to try out Nitto Terra Grappler A/T's. Heard good things about them, too.

I've had BFG AT's, Revos and I'm now running Cooper S/T tires. I live in a snowy/icy climate and so far I really like the Cooper S/T tires. My local discount tire matched unsertire.com so they were $150 each. They have a little hum to them on the pavement but nothing too terrible. But if you're looking at MT and STT then these will be just fine. I would compare them to the BFG AT that I had.

I really enjoy the Cooper S/T tires.

I have heard a lot of people really like the Maxxis bighorns. I have MTR's and I love them but they are a little rough on the road. If I didn't get such a good deal on the MTR's I got then I would definately go with the Maxxis you can find great deals on Ebay...

Have cooper s/t's and love them. Due to some serious abuse and resulting chippage (making up my own word there) I would recommend the Cooper ST-C if any of those sizes will work for you.

I have the Nitto Terra Grapplers and love them. I've had them in the rocks and did fine. They're no MT/R though. They are pretty quiet on the highway and have very good road manors. They've performed well in snowy and icy conditions and even do a nice job in the sand. The best part was the price. I paid less than $120 each shipped to my door.

Yes you are right. BFG's are the shiat. I just bought my 8th set and I've had about every size and style (all-terrain & Mud) out there from 30's to 35's. They really are an awesome tire. I currently have 255's on my Taco and 33x10.50's on my FJ40. You will not find a better tire and yes they are expensive but you get what you pay for. There are other good tires as well but BFG's are the tire I will always run. You can get a good price on these tires but you will have to shop around and it helps if you know people in the tire business. Good luck.

I am running ProComm Extreme AT's and have been very pleased with them so far. They are about half way between the BFG AT and Mud. Much more aggressive than AT but not as aggressive as Mud. Very good road manners. Haven't really had them off-road yet but I am hopeful.

Just wanted to say I run the cooper STT's and love them. There even better with chains on for running snow trails. You might also want to look at Pro-comp tires. A friend run a the new extreme MT and he loves them.

I did some more looking around and i found that the Interco Trxus MT comes in the 255-85. Who has run this tire? and did the tire hold up well? I have heard they are pretty soft compound tire. but they have tons of siping which would be good for street duties.

thanks for all the replies everyone. I did some searching on the other brands mentioned and the biggest problem i found was getting the tire in the size i want. so keep the thoughts coming.

My vote is the BFG AT's. I love mine and I was a diehard Revo guy. The Revo's were great, the BFG's are better. I don't think I will ever switch now.

I wish they would offer up some other sizes. They look like a promising tire. Right now I'm torn between the BFG ATs and the Nitto Terra Grapplers, I deal with more mud then rocks and have seen the BFGs gum up and not clean all that well.

CA-RJ,
Where did you find the Nittos at that price?

BFG's are addictive!
The Commercial Traction TA's have been on our desert racing car for years and years. The same set even! We have two of these spares and never use them except when I manage to peal the tire off the rim. The amazing part is that we just remount them, air them back up and get going again. I'm a big BFG fan.
Never had a flat with my at's and only had one from a nail in my mud terrains.

Now...highway ride... well... don't worry about that so much if you get bfg's.

My vote is beginning to lean towards the BFG MT's. Cost is a little more but BF has the tire sizes i want readily avail. they have a good reputation. and the fact that i've had the AT's before they are looking like the best choice.

Couple more specific questions about the MT's then. how much louder are they than the AT's? How is their braking ability on concrete? I ask about that one specifically because i nearly rear-ended someone with my MT/R's. I locked all 4 wheels, on DRY concrete without even trying. And my truck being as old as it is, the brakes aren't exactly stellar. That was the straw that broke the camels back, for these tires and me. For long distance runs do these tires wear you out with the tire noise and/or rough ride?

Thanks for putting up with my incessant questions. I am very particular about the ride and function of my truck, and with the failure of my current set of tires to perform up to par. i am being very thorough with this next set making sure i will be happy with them.:REOutCampFire03:
