There are several helpful sites on the net like this.

I'm on 235's, just went to 4:56 with my 2.7L 3RZ. Very happy with the combo, I wouldn't hesitate to go one tire size bigger with this gear ratio.

The Aussie is in the rear right now. I have just the ring and pinion for the rear gears and the whole differential and housing for the front. Thanks for the help so far everyone.

I'm thinking about swapping my 4.56 gears for 4.88's as my 56's just aren't cutting it for power and pep with the tires and armor and gear. While most calculators will tell you 4.56's and 33" are perfect I think 4.88's and 33's would be much happier. Some tell me 5.29's are even better but man that seems to be a stretch. I know others running 4.88's and 35's getting better fuel economy than I do now.

SWR,

Thanks for the link. Lots of info for sure.
Got a question for ya...
My '08 Tacoma DC OR 4.0L V6 AT should have 3:73 gears right?
(Tacoma Product Info for this year/model shows 3.727 to be exact), and others on this site have confirmed that as well with their '05+ Tacomas.
My door code is A04B. Do I have 4:56 gears per the chart?
Can you (or anyone else) shed some light on this? Thanks

WS

I don't want to tell you which gears you have and be wrong.

This is one of the best links I've found that will help you figure out what you have.

http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html

It helped me figure out that I have 4:10 gears from the factory, long ago, when I had no idea and I was new to Toyota.

Brian is also a member here at ExPo, but I have not seen him post up in a long time. Hope that helps!

The chart at the link in my earlier post, is to show you what gear would be appropriate for your choice of tire size. Not what gears are currently in your truck. Was that what you asked? Did you mean to say "do I need 4:56 gears". I'm just trying to be clear so nobody gets confuzzelled! I hate confuzzelled!

Thanks, That was a great link too!
I wasn't asking if I needed 4:56 gears (just to clear that up).
The question I had was in regard to the bottom portion of that earlier link and how it showed deciphering the stock 4-character (ie...A04B) manufacturers doorcode sticker. The link above has pretty much the same info in regard to that particular question.
I think I'm going to go with the old fashion approach, put the rear of the truck up on some jackstands, turn the driveshaft, and note the wheel revolutions per turn. I'll let you know what I come up with when I have some time to get to that experiment. Thanks for the reply and your effort!

Most calculators are built by Jeep guys who have larger displacement engines. I started on the ORC Yota email list in about '98. The common advise for 20/22R trucks since that time has been 31's = 4.56's, 33's = 4.88's, and 35's+ = 5.29's

My speedo reads +/- 2MPH of true (checked with a GPS and with mileposts) with 33's and 4.88's.

Were it me, I'd run the 4.56's and some 31's or 235's. They're also less spendy tires to replace while still in college.

Simpler way to do this is to draw a straight line down the drive shaft, then tape a piece of string to the drive shaft right at the drawn line. Rotate the tires one exact revolution. Look at how many times the string crosses the line and what the partial revolution is.

Your truck came with OEM 3.73 gears same as mine did.

All trucks of this vintage are 3.73 with the exception of the 2.7 L 4 cylinder which has 4.10's from the factory.

4.88 Gear Report

For those considering gears on an 05+ Tacoma or 4Runner, my advice is to go with 4.88's if you are running 33's.

My 3 tankfull average mileage with the new 4.88's is 15 MPG with my foot in it :)

That's pretty good considering my armor and the fact that I was getting 12-13MPG with the 3.73's.

Much better power, especially when leaving a red light or on a long incline, and much better low speed control on the trail in 4Lo/1st gear.

RPM's are approximately 2,700 at 80 MPH verified by GPS, around 2,000 at 50 MPH.

On another note, the speedo is off by about 5 MPH (reading 70 when you are actually doing 75 according to GPS), this has not been affected by the re-gear since it was this way before and is due to the 33's.
