Tool Chests...don't know where to begin..

I need to purchase a tool chest. I will be keeping a few odds and ends in there...jumper cables, tow strap, shovel, etc.

I have no idea where to begin.

What kind of toolbox are you looking for? A permanent over-the-bed box for a truck bed, or a removable storage bin?

I have a Husky/Tradesman low-profile box in the bed of my Tacoma that I really like. The only issue is that it's ~21" deep, so it eats up a good chunk of the space in the bed.

I want a permanent, not over the bed storage bin...if such a thing exists!
I was at Tractor Supply looking at them today and they had some that looked to fit the bill but I wasn't sure of their quality.

I bought mine from Walmart, an injection molded weatherproof exterior box with a weatherproof masterlock. Removeable if I unbolt it from the bed, It's about 2' wide 40" long, and 20" tall, so it fits below the bedrails of the truck. It also has grooved feet to fit the grooves of the bed to prevent side to side sliding. I think I spent about $69.00 for it.

I like this one because you cant see it unless you look min the bed
it is steel so I can strap the dirt bike in like usual

Installed it with Bed Bolts so it can be removed when needed

The one thing I'd be careful about if you choose a plastic box - I've heard a lot of people talk about them warping over time. Depending on the year-round temperatures where you live, this might not be a concern. I'm sure it's also dependent on the quality of the plastic used for the box, as well as the design of the box itself.

I'll keep that in mind and research a little further.
This year my home temp range will likely be -12 to 95 degrees F.

I have a similar box to JPNCA, mine is Aluminum diamond plate. I actually made a steel frame to lift it off the floor of the bed. It allows me to put long objects in under it. Can still load bikes and other stuff also. I did similar with the mounting bolts to make it easy to remove. The frame work is three sided so when the box is removed it has the entire bed available for cargo.

I picked up a mini truck box for the back of mine. It fits under my tonneau , allows for storage of things i don't want in the cab, gives me a place to install a compressor and being under the tonneau, keeps prying out:smiley_drive:

Although pricey, and less flexible than a traditional open box design, I'm drawn to these ultra-organized Montezuma portable truck-bed boxes, available in powder-coated steel or diamond-tread aluminum, in three sizes and four colors.

I'd say expensive...$400+ for a 30" tool box....

Also, a key note in my search is that ironically I won't be keeping any tools in my 'tool' box!

I guess mine would be better named a Storage Box because it will have jumper cables, air compressor, shovel, survival items, etc.

I just heard about this from one of my vendors today - the new Pelican 0450 tool case - expensive but very cool.

I purchase all of the Pelican products I use at Lockheed from the nice folks at Beam Distributing in Richmond, VA. Great prices and nice people to do business with. They told me that they have recently started having whole tractor trailer loads of Pelican cases shipped in from California instead of having them shipped individually by UPS. This can save all of us east coast folks some money and feed my Pelican case addiction. ( I think I'm up to 9 or 10 now).
