How do people store their tools in the vehicle and what type of tools do you take with you?

I have a cargobox in my FJ Cruiser that was originally for my '91 4Runner that a carpenter at Boeing made for me.
It fits the FJ Cruiser just fine.
Three drawers hold a lot of tools such as screwdrivers, impact air wrench, socket set, and a lot more.
I know I have pics somewhere with it open in the rig, but I am not sure what folder online they are in.
Here it is in the old rig.
It is much more organized now though.
I will have to update pics of it sometime in the new rig.

I keep my hand tools is a soft, canvas, tankers toolbag. I run an XJ so I am forced into a combination of SAE and metric. The tanker tool bag is large enough for everything I need and hoovers right at the upper end of how heavy I am willing to accept.
I don't carry any 1/2" drive or larger sockets, the 34mm socket I carry is 3/8" drive. The 15" adjustable wrench or Hi-Lift handle can be used on the cheater for more oompf. I keep my combination wrenches in rolls and have another tool roll with socket rails, allen wrenches and screwdrivers.
Having the tool rolls helps keep me from fishing around too much looking for what I need. I don't like dragging too many tools out of the bag on the trail (or driveway). The nature of a tool bag is hardly considered organized. Having some rolls ensures tools make it back in the bag, an empty pocket in a wrench roll is a good indicator that you just left the 13mm wrench sitting on the manifold.

I keep all of my hand tools in a soft sided tool bag. It never rattles, easy to move from one vehicle to another if I need to. I keep a lot of tools on there so it is pretty heavy but I would rather have a certain tool than not. Also I do no not carry a lug wrench, I just use the 1/2" drive with jack handle if necessary!
I currently don't have the bag secured but I am thinking I may do that soon, could be pretty painful in an accident or rollover!

I am thinking of getting a mechanic set from Sears. Would that be to much overkill? The soft side bag sounds like a great idea with the tube rolls.

I carry a DeWalt reinforced canvas bag that is so inches by so inches. I carry many things
Tool wrap 1. Metric open/closed end wrenches
Tool wrap 2. Standard open/ closed end wrenches
Tool wrap 3. combo gear wrenches
Tool wrap 4. pliers (needle and snub) zip ties, tape, many screw drivers, channel locks, ratchets, ratchet ext., boz knife.
In the bag, 3lb. sledge, 14" pry bar, hack saw, 1/4"-3/8" SAE/metric sockets, and various other tools.
Bag weight somewhere around 70lbs.

I have been assembling a tool kit for Boomer just this week and ordered http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/it...ols-_-Tool Storage and Transfer Tanks-_-4ZB62 yesterday. I also picked up a large ammo can at the local Military surplus supply which can accomodate the tool roll, all the OBA accessories, and other misc. odds and ends. I like having all of my tools in one place and this setup seems to be the answer. Unlike my mechanics boxes in the shop, this setup doesn't exactly have a "one place for everything" feature, so knowing I have collected and stowed all my tools may be a bit more difficult.
At this point the Boomer tool kit includes the following:
-Full set of metric and SAE box end wrenches
-Full set of 1/4" and 3/8" drive sockets and ratchets, extensions, U-Joint Fittings
-Screwdrivers, long and short
-Allen wrenches in metric and SAE
-Nut Driver Inserts

I just use socket strips for all my sockets, and I have a good mix of SAE and metric just incase. Too many times have my tools helped out someone else also. The rest of the tools (wrenches, extensions, pliers, etc.) are organized amongst the pockets. Everything else just resides in the main pocket. Sometimes it might take some digging to find something but it's not bad.

Each bag comes with one or two straps with footmans loops to tie them down.
I have a three of the tool totes in different sizes strapped down inside the cab along with a door bag on each door. The tool bags and roll-ups are carried in a box in the bed. The tool bags are good for carrying jumper cables and tow straps.
It probably sounds like I carry a whole bunch of tools with me, and I guess I do. I'm not exactly lacking for storage space. I got in the habit that if I ever used a tool to work on Buck, I just carried that tool with me. I even carry some oddball stuff, like pullers,a clutch alignment tool, and a Holley jet/rebuild kit, that I don't even want to have to use in the field.

I have a Snap on tool bag that I got off the truck thinking it would be a great bag for the vehicle and it is for the most part. It just seems like every time I need a tool I can't find it and have to dump out half the bag to get to it. There have been a few times that I lost my patience and just turned the thing upside down in the drive way. There has to be a better way so I'll keep an eye on this thread.
Used to use Tool bags, they sucked. Nothing ever stayed where it should be, 5-minutes fixes turned into 20 minute fiascos.
Switched to a Pelican 1600, works great, but it's pretty heavy. Not a big deal when working on my truck where I know what size everything it and can grab exactly what I need and leave the case in the back, but when somebody a few trucks ahead of or behind you needs something and has no clue what size, it kinda sucks. Going to do the same thing with 2 1550s, or possibly a 1550 and a 1500.
Everything is laid out on rails and stays put through anything, rolling the truck, 40mph whoops, etc.

I too like the small tanker bags. I keep cheap impact sockets, rachet and air rachet in one. Screwdrivers, pliers, channel locks ect in another one. Bolts, nuts, straps, tape, JB weld, RTV etc in another one. They fit in the side panels of the FJ80. The bigger stuff all resides in a soft side bag in the far back- breaker bar, pry bar, lug wrench, file, tarp, various straps, spare parts etc. I also use CO2 for the tires, which works great with a cheapo HF air wrench as well. HTH
