It's good that you confronted them. The whole thing, (now knowing exactly what they did), was quite scary.
Being wildy drunk and behind the wheel or carrying a loaded weapon are extremely dangerous. Doing all three at the same time?:smileeek: So many things could've gone wrong.
Even if the cops had shown up; if they'd witnessed friend 2's driving [16 point tire smoke filled turn], and then saw friend 1 with the weapon, someone could have been shot and killed.
I'm glad you confronted them. I just hope they listen. In my experience, people don't always heed the warnings of friends. So, your caution about trusting them is certianly warranted.
If anything of the sort happens again, I believe you have a civic duty to contact the police ASAP. If for nothing else, but to protect others around them who could be seriously injured or killed. You may not want to put friends in jail, but if this conduct continues, they'll eventually get there, but probably under even worse conditions; e.g., manslaughter, 2nd degree murder, vehicular manslaughter, etc. So, I'm glad to hear that you've already made that decision.
As a responsible gun owner, I hate to think of the influence that some idiot's actions has on those who don't like gun owners or don't want to understand gun ownership. In short, it's like Jonathan said, "[they] give the rest of us gun owners a bad name."
I'm not trying to bash, and I know you came to the community for advice. I believe it's important to not only look at what did happen (luckily no one was hurt), but learn from the mistake(s) by taking a long hard look at what could have happened. Please accept my apology for not knowing how to sugar-coat it.
Good Luck,
TD
