Toyota Guy Considering Land Rovers...

And that's just your opinion.

And when it comes time for him to spend his money on a truck does anyone elses really matter?
I still can't wrap my head around why someone gives a fat turd about what someone else drives. Such a waste of energy.

I didn't realize I did.

It's all good. I knew by starting this thread that some people might get heated. Please, do not get "into it" on my behalf. I appreciate all the opinions posted regarding LR and TLC. I'm a T4R guy and have no real experience in either TR or TLC except for the first six years of my life in the back of an FJ40.

When it comes time to spend my money I'll be more worried about making my wife happy with the final purchase than anyone else. :sombrero:

My old D1 gave me 100k with no real bother , a failed swivel bearing caused its only trip on the back of recovery truck, to fair it had been clonking for the week previous , apart from duff batteries always started even in coldest of winters, ( I live high in hills of the Cotswolds winter can be harsh here)
It's had ; a brake calliper, oil cooler pipes, then service items like cam belts and brakes
A couple of road accidents that it shrugged off , ( one where I destroyed a panel van , peeled it open from front door to rear light)

So in my experience the reliability has never been a issue , just regular maintenance and sympathetic driving
Rust has been a problem , the UK fondness for using salt in winter has ravaged the sills and boot floor and that's what forced me to retire her (with 180k on the clock ) pending a marathon welding session when I get time .
I replaced her with another 300tdi , a late model ex jap import with no rust at all !

I am a n00b when it comes to all this stuff so take this with a grain of salt:

I know how you feel for the Land Rover look from your childhood I have the same... I have always wanted an old Rover as well as an old FJ40 (or BJ) but I don't want one as my daily driver.

But if you need/want something that is daily comfortable and yet off-road worthy and Toyota reliable... Maybe a Lexus GX or LX??? I know "what a LEXUS is affordable?" well yes... if you spend time looking and get into the '06 or older. I found an '07 GX470 that was in mint condition that was a reasonable price it was close to 100k miles but I know "Yota" and he assures me it is good for another 100K miles. The GX is your 4runner with a different (Much more comfortable) body/interior. For example I could not fit in the back seat of 4runner but the GX back seat is very comfortable.

My parents had a Disco II and I will never own one of those unless I have time and a garage to do everything myself and don't care about the interior. The basic "truck" was fine, by that I mean the motor and trans had almost no problems in the year or so they had it. But EVERYTHING else was the problem. It was in the shop once a month minimum and usually twice a month. From broken switches, electrical motors (power windows for example), ECU issues, Antilock brake issues, door latches, everything else, there was always something broken on that thing (usually nothing that left you stranded,...usually). Granted my parents are rough on cars/trucks but this was the first one they paid more in repairs than in car payments. They normally drive a car/truck for 250K+/- miles and the wheels fall off on the way to dealership to buy another car. The Disco they sold before 120K miles because it was too expensive to keep on the road in working order.

Thanks again RoverTrader. I'll keep my eyes peeled for something similar to what you just sold. Although, I still hesitate at the premium fuel requirement. I would love to have a diesel Land Rover or Toyota or anything for that matter that can hit the backcountry. After three tours in Afghanistan I kind of miss the Toyota Hi-Lux and Ford Rangers they have over there. But, I don't know that I would want to do a swap no matter what I end up with, Land Rover or Toyota. I'm a fan of trying to keep things as stock as possible or only making modifications that overwhelmingly add to the value or capability of a rig. Discos just look so good though...

I think a diesel swap does "add to the value or capability", if not overwhelmingly, then at least significantly. The problem is, you'll never make that $6k back in fuel bills. I was out on Saturday with a friend who spent 17 years with a '96 V6 5spd 4-Runner. He had never driven a diesel before. By the end of the day he was just amazed at how much easier it is to drive a 200tdi in off-road situations than his 4Runner. He'd started the day by saying he was probably just going to stall my engine when he tried to drive it, and everyone else just kind of laughed at the comment and I said I'd like to see him try to stall the engine in 4 low. After driving it for a few minutes over some obstacles he understood.

So yeah, you'll probably not get out of a diesel swap what you put in on the resale, but you'll certainly add value to your vehicle. It will also be more fuel efficient and better off-road in almost every metric. Additionally, it will be slower and a LOT noisier.

Is Falconworks a local shop in Tucson? Good point on the "fixability" on the trail.

They also make the small parts that fixed my 3 amigos problem...didn't deal with them personally, but for less than $200 I killed the amigos on my own. For that I will always be a fan of Falconworks.

Range rover = happy wife.

This is true...my girlfriend likes my Disco but would love a L322.

I've responded to this question before (as it comes up about once a month) the same way....Toyotas are incredibly reliable, capable and fun - but to me there is something about them that is just boring. The interior is bland, the drivetrain is steady but unremarkable, and the feel is just of quality but no heart. Land Rovers have something else that is innately built in that is hard to describe...and if I tried to describe it, I'd get mocked for my sentimentality towards a vehicle. I had always wanted one - even though I KNEW a Land Cruiser was the "smarter" option. In January I pulled the trigger on an '04 DII and it has far surpassed anything I had hoped it would turn out to be. It's more capable than my old modded TJ, XJ, or WJ. And as long as you don't mind turning a wrench, there is almost no quirk that you can't fix yourself.

Good luck.

PS = I too hate the text spacing on this forum. Love the forum...hate the spacing.

So being reliable is boring? I guess you've never relied on a truck to save your life then.

Reliability is absolutely a component of safety. Tell me how much safer you are if your unreliable vehicle breaks down at night in a bad part of a city, for example.

I'm a Land Rover guy. I love Land Rovers. At the end of the day though, they're just hunks of metal and plastic on their own. It's the humans who find "character" in a hunk of metal and plastic. Some people like Toyotas. Some like Land Rovers. Many of us like both ... even Jeeps! We're all entitled to our opinion, but let's all remember it's just that.
