Is anyone familiar with hilux's lineup available worldwide with the following:
-Xtra-cab
-Diesel
-LHD or RHD
-Preferably made between 1989-1994 years???
Is so, where?
I assume you are in North America?
The Hilux is the same truck as our Pickup in those years, just with some limitations on available models and options. The 1984 through 1995 XtraCab is the same worldwide. We did not get a Hilux Double Cab in the USA.
The trucks would have had the L-series diesel as well as the various 22R or later the 3VZ. We got the 22R, 22R-E and 3VZ-FE. Around the world they also got a 2L, 2L-T and 2L-TE. Less common would have been a 3L and the 5L-TE. The L diesel is an OK motor, but not one of the ones people point to as high points of Toyota engines. It's sort of the diesel equivalent of the 22R, a workhorse but don't expect to get anywhere in a hurry.
If you want a diesel, they are showing up fairly often in Canada and will most likely be RHD JDM trucks. But if you are OK with a LHD, then open up the classifieds and find the nicest Pickup you can and you gotcha a Hilux. If you want a diesel with a minimum of title hassle, get a half cut 2L-TE and swap it in for the 22R or better do the 1KZ-TE from a 1996 and newer Hilux (which we never got in NA). The 1KZ is by all accounts a much better engine, just like the 3RZ-FE 2.7L gasoline is a major improvement.
