Out in SE Oregon last week and came across a fellow towing a rather large Grand Designs 5th wheel with 4 slide outs with a large Ram truck. What was unusual was the utility trailer that he had hooked up to the rear of the 5th wheel. He was returning from wintering in Baja and said he had been doing it for several years. I didn't know that was legal.
Double towing like that is something I see a lot of. Definitely not a great idea. One of my favorites is when they mount the ball on the tailgate of something like an old station wagon.
It is actually called triple towing (they count the tow vehicle) and is legal in a lot of states. The link below identifies where it is legal and some more info.

I installed my Terrapod Roof Top Tent. Only 120 pounds and 6.5" tall with rack and cross bars. From ground height you don't even notice it. Very impressive. Bomb proof shell and stut locks in for extra support. Still fits in garage.

Down sized tow vehicle but up sized tow capacity. Lexus GX 460 Lux w/ off road package with 6,500 lb towing capacity.
To obtain that capacity technically you have to run a sway bar. As I am told no go on sway bars with ARK articulating hitch. Trailer is only 3,800 pounds gwr but I worried about sway with 8+ feet tall trailer and short wheelbase Lexus. So I have a "Freeway on road " system and the Off road ARK system. Just swap them out when I hit the dirt. Lexus has auto height control rear airbags. Like 3" or so very cool. So glad I bought such a light trailer. The Lexus could likely handle a bit more set up this way maybe 5,200 gvr .

Out for another outing with Abi and dog named Rouge. Not sure there is any value or wisdom in this post just an excuse to post cool camp pictures 😉

So I traded my 19 " wheels and tires for 18" KO2s on my 2023 Lexus GX 460 Luxury with Off-Road package. Going with an off road and a separate on road hitch setup worked perfectly. While on freeway I had a Curt Friction Sway Control hitch with standard ball tounge hitch with small ball on ball mount. It is the same exact square tube insert as my ark articulating hitch. This makes for a quick swap when heading off road.

I headed up to Monte Cristo peak just up from Huntsville Utah it's in the 9,000 foot range. Looked at the camp ground but to crowded. Decided to head out Curtis Creek road blind. Not wise especially since this was my first real off road experience. So the road started fairly tame but started going down steep switch backs. I soldiered on thinking of going 7 miles out and back. Having crawl control on the GX really helped on the steep decent. Found a nice camp definitely bear country. Was being very cautious. After a few days the worrying of pulling my trailer out of this area weighed on me and the mosquitos drove me out of the high county to a local Reservoir called Echo. Nice bug free camp ground right on water. Not sure how folks pull heavy off road trailers with huge trucks on tight steep trails.
