That's the beauty of a bicycle. You don't need to even grab another gear to up the watts (resistance). Just pedal harder! With a fixie or single speed there will be a point of decreasing efficiency as your cadence exits optimal revolutions for producing more watts, but big deal....that's even got benefits.


Excellent point about training for carrying loads. I ride with a loaded camelback from time to time to help develop my core and back strength for my ultra light touring jaunts. That however does zippo for helping me produce more bicycle propelling power. That is done with intervals measured in watts.
