Transfer Case Question

OK, I need some help. I have looked and posted on 4x sites I visit with no success.
I had to put a new(used) t-case in my truck. There is a screw on the bottom that hold the poppet plunger (detent) in place. It is sealed with an o-ring. Can I unbolt this safely to replace the o-ring with out messing anything up ?
Like I said, I have looked all of the WWW and can not find an answer.
Hopefully someone here has dealt with this before.

Turns out on closer inspection that this "new" case has a hairline crack. Went back to the place I got it , to exchange it, since I purchased the warrenty for it and they don't have any other ones and can't get one.
So the suggestions was that I try to find and buy another one and bring this one back to them for a refund. Why purchase the warrenty if they can't get a replacement (shrug shoulders).
The guy did suggest that I could JB weld it:Wow1:, but I bet that would void their warrenty. Great customer service.

Let me Update this

so , I went back to parts planet this morning and spoke with the guy i originally purchased the t-case from. I explained to him the situation and what transpired on saturday. He called the other yard that had a t-case and was able to make a deal with them. I picked it up this afternoon and it has the warranty. I'm glad at least one of the counter guys understands customer service. He even stated that they wanted to build return customer and not chase them away.
Which to me is very smart, since parts planet bought out a very popular yard and changed it.
