I was just in Mexico this past weekend. We had no issues, but then again I was walking around the desert with a shotgun. . .

Mexico does require some prudence, but no more than any other developing country. Violence against tourists is rare. Drive during the day, travel with others, avoid the border region.

I did have a moment of discomfort this last weekend though, when I was walking around the border on the Tijuana side at about 10pm and realized neither Sinuhe or I had a cell phone on us - no problem a good taco stand can't solve.

I like the idea of a Spot, but sold mine after it failed to work on my vacation in Hawaii. Hawaii is on the edge of their coverage map (at the time) and I gambled on it working, but it doesn't seem like it was in the middle of nowhere. Hawaii is a pretty popular place. On the other hand, it worked in Alaska in some pretty backwoods 'spots'.
