I had made the assumption that the rear cargo area would have to be gutted. In some of the preliminary plans I pulled together that was my approach. I would certainly have no problem with that approach - in fact I'd probably prefer it.

I think most Jeep owners wouldn't have a problem removing the carpet and trim. Its designed to come out and there are drain holes in the floor. I took my carpet out over 2 years ago and never put it back in. I don't think Wranglers should even come with carpet but that's for another thread. I don't think I have any pics of my interior pre carpet removal but I can tell you that prior to 2011 there was no plastic, it's all carpet up the sides of the tub and the rear portion.

I'm just not convinced there is that much (a few inches) functional drawer space to be gained between the trim and tub.

A few inches of space is very valuable with a 2 door!

Hey folks- sorry it's been quiet for a while. It's been busy over here moving and getting ready for a new baby. I've been finishing up a prototype system for a friend with an Xterra, which has been a great exercise in weight and space saving measures that I can transfer over to the Jeep designs. Even though the Xterra is much smaller in cargo room, there is almost as much lateral space as the Land Cruiser design due to these new features! Also, the system so far is LIGHT. One of the big advantages of the Xterra (and Jeep) designs is that the mounting locations for the system are along the outboard edges of the system, thus allowing the bottom of the "box" to be essentially a skeleton. This alone saves a ton of weight. The back of the system is also skeletonized. I made almost the entire system from 12mm baltic birch as opposed to 18mm, which saves a lot more. It's also plenty strong given the shorter spans in the system. The hurdle I have with the 12mm is designing for knock-down fasteners to work with the limited material width, but I think we can get there. I have a 2 door I've been measuring, and am still looking for a local 4 door. That's where we're at!

The drawer system bolts to existing cargo mounts. When extended, the landing pad just rests on the back of the folded 2nd row. Once you get the hang of it, prob 2-3 min to deploy I'm guessing.

I'm not quite understanding how that sleeping platform works? Do you just slide the top piece forward? It's not hinged or on rails or anything it's a separate piece? Then bolt the metal foot piece to it? That seems complicated and clumsy so I hope I'm wrong I just don't see any type of slide or hinge system.

Yes, it's a separate piece that stows on top of the system with draw latches. There are no hinges for the main portion, just the "kicker". To deploy you undo the 4 draw latches, slide it forward about halfway so it's still supported by the main box. The leg system attaches easily with star knobs. You then slide the platform until it drops onto the support brackets. Then 2 draw latches secure it to the main box again. "Complicated" and "clumsy" are relative terms. Sure, I could have put it on some trick heavy duty slide mechanism, but then there would be complaints about weight, cost, and valuable space taken up. And you still wouldn't have a level platform. It's also designed to be an add-on to an existing system. Not everyone wants to sleep in the truck, and frankly designing a whole new system for those few that do would not be a good use of R&D funds. It's also meant to be easily removable from the truck for day-to-day use. You can undo the 4 draw latches and slide it out. The wings snap into place for a clean look. Before a trip you can snap the wings out and drop the platform on before loading the rig.

Your method makes sense, and I can see your reasons for choosing to do it that way. After explaining it, it's not a bad way to go. I would maybe try to figure out a way to make the "leg" portion attached somehow or make it simpler/less bulky.

Maybe the pictures don't portray the size well. The leg system is actually quite light and packs small to fit between the 2nd row and the system. Here it is stowed.
