I was referring to importing a 25+ year old Austrian Styer 12M16, and that is the truck I am hoping to learn more about with this thread.

As I mentioned in my OP, Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG made the Pinzgaur and G-wagon, so they certainly know how to build good stuff. Stewart and Stevenson (now BAE) I'm not so confident in.

But I admit that's a lot of supposition, and I would love to be educated.

Also, if I buy a US Military surplus truck, export restrictions could prevent me from taking it out of the US. Not really what I want in a global expedition vehicle.

On the other hand, I can legally import a 25 y.o Styer and drive it wherever I want without worry.

Just to clarify on the military vehicle export. If you are going to keep the truck it's basically a paper that says you can't sell the truck to anyone outside the US.

If you want to take the truck for an expedition then sell it there (say, Brazil for example), then you fall into the export documents. That's where it gets much more difficult.

I'm looking at a 1988 L 2000 steyr. I can find no info on this truck or anything similar. Anyone know of a good reference for these trucks?

Is it possible to import and register STEYR 12M18 to US?

I am going to Germany in July to look at some expedition trucks and initially had my eye on some UNIMOG 1300L but found some nice STEYR 12M18, that I would prefer as a base for several reasons.
I know there are a lot of 25 year and older Unimogs in the US and it must be possible to register them and get them street legal somehow.
But - what about the STEYR 12M18. The ones I am looking at are built 1986 and 1987.

Does anyone have experience with import and successfull registration of the same truck or knows an import company that has imported a STEYR into the US before?
