Truck Topper/Cap Lift for camping

im in the same boat. already have the topper, and the sleeping platform so to add this makes sense. as for weather tight it looks ok. if wind and weather got extreme I would crank the system down and shut the window/tailgate... that's half the reason I switched to truck camping, storms in a tent kinda got old.

Yea the system is up there in price and if I was starting from scratch I would consider the flip pack, but I already have a pretty well established setup that this would make even more livable...

hate to quote mayself...

I am currently awaiting an ARE MX series topper. The MX gives you 5-6 extra inches of headroom. Don't seem like much but it is. Plus, you can always get the TW series for even more headroom.
I needed a flat top for a roof rack & the MX fit the bill nicely.

Once you figure out the lift, it should be relatively easy in your "neck of the woods", to find someone to make canvas sides that collapse upon lowering. I would look into HD canvas tarps at Tractor Supply. Prob the cheapest option. Just have someone cut & sew them for your application.

If I understand it right, then, the topper is not even actually attached to the truck, it's attached to some kind of frame that is then lifted up off the bed? Seems to me that would not be very well sealed against weather, would allow dust, possibly water in, and would rattle like crazy off-road.
.
That seems to be an awful lot of weight and complexity (and expense!) for a little headroom. Couldn't you achieve the same thing much simpler by just going with a high-rise topper? I always preferred a high-rise to a cab-high anyway, especially on a mini-truck.

As for the idea of a built-in pop top, it's a great idea but the difficulty is creating a product that is well built enough to withstand the rugged conditions it's likely to see and still making it affordable. Wildernest tried to thread that needle and they just couldn't do it, even though their product was extremely cool (I've seen one up close, it's very impressive.) Flip-Pacs are nice (though ugly, IMO, unlike the elegant looking Wildernest) but I think they start in the mid-$3k range and go up from there.
