Tundra Frame Rust?

It's coming for the newer Tacomas too if my truck is any gauge.

Moving from San Diego to mid Ohio last August and watching my frame going from pristine to cancerous blotches in just one winter here was surreal to watch. Seriously, and more to the point, just a couple weeks in late March as it started to warm was what made my head spin. The time I spend in the self service car washes on my knees cleaning the underside seems to have been for nothing.

I'm serious contemplating buying a winter vehicle. Wonderful, I'll be slippin' and slidin' around in some piece of junk while my four wheel drive truck with dual batteries sits in the garage.

Toyota if your listening, you're about one notch above GM on my confidence scale.

The rusting of Toyota frames, and vehicles in general, is nothing new. They'd all still be driving around if they didn't rust away. Most of the serious rust comes from the inside out, it starts in the joints and seams... the places you can't see. I use the stuff shown below everywhere that dosn't get a direct spray off the wheels, inside rockers, fender lips, inside the frame, anything zinc or cad coated, bolts and nuts... it works, it dosn't smell bad...

Toyota has extended warrantees on the Tacoma's for 15 years and has taken care of all the ones that have failed their tests. Would GM have done the same?

RE: winter beater, my Civic with snow tires is pretty solid. Invest in an extra set of wheels and snow tires if you go that route.

True enough. "GM" and "Mandatory Recall" are words I have heard spoken in the same breath often enough.

I remember the drill. Time to hit the auto auction.

Very sad. I wonder what the REAL reason is behind this. What exactly is different about these frames that allows rust to develop so badly, so quickly. What is Toyota / DANA doing different than other auto makers?

I think it boils down to the quality of the prep/paint process... or lack thereof. They should be galvanizing the frames, zinc dipping, or some type of anti-corrosion treatment AND using a quality HD paint like POR-15

It would be interesting to find out what the paint/coating used on Land Cruiser or Toyota Truck frames was, and whether a change was made when the Tacoma first came out.

Hmmm...ours is an 03 but I'll be watching. My uncles Tacoma was bought back. I'm not going to crawl around under a truck rustproofing if it has issues.

They'll all have issues sooner or later, especially if driven in the winter with the coacktails that are used on the roads these days... the wax will prevent or eliminate the issue. But I don't blame one for not wanting to go through the time and effort....

I was really set on getting a Tacoma, then reading up on the Tacoma and Tundra frame rusting issues. I live in Chicago and there's no way I would buy a vehicle knowing such a serious issue exist. Too bad.

Then reading up on the FJ Cruiser's body ripping issue doesn't instill much confidence in me either. Basically I have lost all good feelings regarding Toyota reliability. Never owned one and will not now.

I live in New England (heart of the rust belt) and my truck sits a few hundred feet from Long Island Sound (Part of the Atlantic Ocean) I dare you to find rust on the frame of my 07 Tacoma. Oh yeah and I rarely wash my truck too...about 3 times a year.

The first two model years of the 05+ Tacoma had some problems, but all new designs do. Not saying there are no problems with 07 onward though either, but go ahead and try to find a vehicle that does not have some sort of problem that people complain about.
