Turbo time update with Pics!

VNTs aren't very far off the path. I've had one for 4 years and about half a dozen others since then have as well (that I know of).

Thats usually because the injectors have never been out of the engine for cleaning. They are a 100k mile maintenance item.

I ran a VNT for a long time in my last 300D and yes it made great power and would smoke the tires to nothing right off the line. It produced 170RWHP on a dyno so yes I am a big fan of them. The problem is that I lived under the hood of that car and most people are not willing to do that.

until someone comes up with a good controller that controls the vanes and the wastegate and is simple and plug and play turnkey simple a turbo swap to a VNT is just over the head of most enthusiasts. Add in the fact that very few diesel injection pump service centers know anything at all about the injection pump and you now have a half worked out conversion at best. A diesel tune as you know has as much to do with proper fueling as it does with boost profile.

As far as the nozzles go, yes I agree that alot of the upside comes from the fact that people are replacing old dirty nozzles. But I have also installed them into low mileage cars as well with awesome results. I did a replacement into a car that had 65000 miles on it and had just had the injectors rebuilt and pop tested at 50k. The improvement was still huge. The owner of the car could not believe the difference they made and commented about 20 times how much quieter the car was then before. He also liked how there was much less smoke at start up.

The bosio injector nozzles are just a better more modern design then what was out there in 1985. The difference is not only with the MB's but across a number of makes. The VW guys all swear by the bosio injectors, the difference they make in my 1.9 TDI makes the car drive like a different car alltogether.

Just an update, I have torn down the engine, installed new cylinder sleeves, installed the crank and the pistons (new rings), had my oil pan (main cast aluminum pan) stolen by crackheads, just recieved my head back from the machine shop, installed the valve seals and springs.

Once the oil pan arrives from California about $200, I will close the bottom end up and finish the work on the head re-assembly.

I will also re-build the turbo, purchase a new larger diameter exhaust system and after the bugs are worked out install my veggie system. I'm keen on doing a 1.5" lift and running 33x10.5 tires. I have to admit this is a labour of love. I work on it once a week and seem to always run into some challenge to slow me down.

Cheer me on guys, I need it to keep pushing on.

Go on, 39Ronin!!:wings:

The turbo swap is probably the best swap you can do on your rig. There is a great potential in this engine, so just keep up the good work and you will be rewarded:ylsmoke:

Pictures maybe??

There's also Craig Reece of http://www.plantdrive.com, fellow ExPortal poster and explorer.

I bought my single tank veggie equipment from him and he is top notch. From him, I bought a vegtherm (inline electric fuel heater) and Vormax (fuel filter with built in particle/water separator) which also works as a coolant/fuel heat exchanger. Both items are necessities for running straight veggie.

I've been running SVO/WVO since 2004 on my '82 300GD (also my daily driver) all with Craig's help and guidance. I experimented with other equipment and have found his to be simple and of quality. His experience is worth way more than the goods you pay for.

I live and do most of my travels in mild climates. So, running a single tank system on a 617A is as easy as it gets. I may be adding a tank heater at some point so I don't have to blend with biodiesel and/or petrol diesel during the colder months (like right now, it's friggin freezin in the Bay Area).

Good luck with the build and swap. Don't forget to check out the P3 and clubgwagen forums. Several people have done this and have documented it well. "Syncro" is doing it now so there is some fairly fresh info to be had.

Ahhh, the joys of calling Squampton home... I thought the crack/meth heads stayed out of Ravens Plateau... :sombrero:

Any updates? I just moved to the Okanagan, and drive by a house that has 2 4-door G's and 2 Turbo diesel wagons in the driveway... I smell some swappin! :sombrero:

Just an update, the swap is finished and the 33 x 10.5 tires are installed. I have 2 factory saddle tanks that I will install as part of my veggie system. I am almost there! Just need to work the engine in and make a few adjustments before even considering running a veggie system.

Looks great, 39ronin. Let us know how your sedan air cleaner filter set up works out. Those filters are much cheaper than the G air filter set up, but the canister shakes with the rest of the engine as you know and often times the bushings supporting the housing will crack and rot and the whole thing will shake all over the place. Not to mention the G air box housing allows for much more access to the turbo, exhaust and everything else down there (starter..etc).

To do this you need the following:

Original G Class 460 tube air box
180 degree neck from turbo to original sedan airbox
custom breather hose from valve cover to 180 degree plastic neck
cheap flexible hose and 1 silicone connector piece (found 2 connectors + hose at Pep Boys for $19.00)
heat shield tape stuff (from hardware store)

Take plastic 180 degree neck, stick on turbo, hose clamp down with proper german hose clamp. connect plastic flex hose to inside of other end of plastic 180 degree neck and connect other end of flexible to silicone connector with hose clamp and other end of silicone connector piece to original G airbox. I placed heat shielding material around the plastic flexible hose where the hose rubbed on the cool side of the turbo to prevent melting. I used this set up for over 6 months before I sold the G Wagen and it worked flawlessly. Never fell off, rattled...etc

I kept my G airbox when I did my turbo diesel swap.

Hi Synder,
I would prefer to run the original cylinder style filter but I needed to free up some sidewall space in my engine compartment for the veggie install. As you mentioned the filter is jiggling quite a bit, I ordered new mounts(bushings) so hopefully I can calm it down.

Off topic. On this vehicle you had the Mercedes spare tire cover, did it fit the full sized spare even though you ran 35's?

It was an aftermarket tire cover, but the spare was not a 35" tire. It was a Boomerang tire cover (they are in Colorado IIRC), but the tire was like a 265/85/15 if IIRC.

What veggie system are you installing? I did a greasecar on my first G Wagen when I was 17 for my high school senior project. We put the solenoid switchers on the driver side fender (near the injection pump). Installation was ultra easy. Pictures below

This is the nicest G interior I ever have seen. Nicer then designo blablabla
Recaro with handrest, headrests on the backseats, the folding seats in the back, wood, heated seats, power windows. ahhhhhhhh love it!!!!
If you ever want to sell it... sent me an e-mail.
Those wheels are also very nice. What is the color? is there a polished lip?
the window switches and heated seats switches are installed on a base. do you have a part number of that? I like to install electric windows and heated seats on my G. I love those armrests are they the same as from the 463 series?
