Personal, I would keep the DII. You don’t have any leaks, the ABS must still be functioning since that was not brought up, and you have not destroyed the diff from over use of the traction control. No matter what vehicle you get, it will break down. You currently have a connection and an understanding of your vehicle and what you can’t and can do with the way its current setup is. This is hard get until you have spent several hundred miles behind the wheel.

In the end the choice is yours and I hope you the best of luck. I do know it is a hard choice, which is why I choose to keep my DII instead of junking it. But for what it is worth, it sounds like you have taken good care of the rover, so fill the tank with gas and point it in the direction you want to go. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures of your trip.

Both Toyota and LR will get you where you need to go, but IMO after riding in my brother Tacoma, I would take the Rover. The seats are uncomfortable to me.

Im certain whatever you do you will be fine. I wheel with alot of rovers and they certainly have more breakdowns that the toyotas. And the last time we were out the fuel thing shocked me. They arent running anything bigger than 285's and get btwn 10-13. Now feel free to chime in with your mileage but I wasnt impressed. I have a 2002 4Runnner 137k and my brother a 2002 Tacoma 90k no problems. Obviously regular maintenance is the key 100k service and I change my oil every 13k with AmsOil. To each there own but thats just my $0.02.

I did research Disco's prior to the purchase of my 4Runner I had a 95 Toyota Pickup. I looked and looked and found that they were riddled with mechanical problems. Although simple they might be that means down time for me and I cant afford any down time. My wife and I travel all over and I work all over the state of FL I bought my 4Runner with 68k in Oct 2005 it currently has 137k. I drive alot more than most.

My experience with my two Rovers, both Series 1s

1999 Disco Series 1 with 113,000 miles, owned since new.
1997 Disco Series 1 with 117,000 miles, owned since 74,500 miles.

List of problems
1. Rear diff break, removed driveshaft and axles then drive 750 miles home.
2. Power steering box leak, replaced under warranty (1999).
3. Water pump (1999)
4. Alternator (1997)
5. Wheel bearings (1997 & 1999)
6. Catalytic Converter (1999)
7. Misc seals

I have not had to do head gasket yet.
They have never died and left me stranded.

If I average the 113,000 miles on the 1999, I gets 14.5 average mpg over its total life (yes, I am a record keeper)

If I drive 55mph on the flat road of Kansas, I will get 18mpg.

Well, I don't know what to tell you. I have owned four Rovers - all of them really great. The ONLY reason I am selling the Disco is that I need pickup and can't afford to have both. I even checked into buying a trailer for the Rover, but space in the driveway is too much of an issue.

My Disco has zero problems. I replaced an H2O pump and the front cover a couple of months ago because I have a dog I love more than life and I noticed a SPOT of coolant on the floor. Chance favors the prepared mind you know.

The Disco gets Mobil 1 every 4K with a Land Rover oil filter and a K&N air filter. No break downs, good gas mileage, even with a rack, plenty of power and great comfort. No way I would hesitate to drive this from Alaska to Colorado.

I am making myself sick here...

Yeah - with the doggie, gear (elelctronics) and the place I am moving to in Colroado, a truck is what I gotta have for now. It's hell to be poor.

Sounds to me that the rovers awesome too! Not like I didnt know that already but seeing as how they dont make a pickup at least a new one, looks like Toyota is the way to go. Is to bad you have to get rid of a perfectly good rover, that would be like me getting rid of the taco for a D-II for seating reasons. Yeah I see you dilema.

I was able to get a smoking deal on an '05 Tacoma 4x4 yesterday. It has 7865 miles on it, white and will be a great daily drive - camping truck for Colorado.

Seeing the two parked next to each other shows me a lot. The Rover with its hertiage and character oozing out of every angle and Toyota looking a lot like a Japanese car. But then I look at the EPA fuel sticker for the Tacoma - and the warrenty, and fell a little better. Not much.

Anyone need a solid Rover with some great goodies?
