Two year circumnaviagtion of Africa in my 2007 JKUR - The Road Chose Me

Sorry for the lack of updates and thanks for bringing this thread back.

The diesel conversion on the Jeep has turned out to be a lot more work, and a lot more complicated than I ever could have imagined.

Every time I set a timeline or estimate of when I'll be on the road I miss my mark and get delayed again, so at this point I'm simply saying I'll be on the road ASAP.

Lots of updates to come, soon(ish)

Hi Everyone,

Here's a curve ball for the plan - the Mercedes Diesel engine sucked leaking diesel and ranaway, revving at 7k for 5-10 seconds. Scary stuff indeed.
We're pretty sure valves met pistons, and the engine is dead.

After all of this, with all of the money and time invested, I've decided to sell the Jeep and cut my losses.

I'm fighting hard to still get myself and a Jeep Wrangler to Africa.
More to come on that front soon.

Always an adventure, even when unplanned!

Wow that sucks! I've always thought the closer to stock you keep a vehicle the more reliable it will be. As cool as the diesel swap sounded, it probably would have been safer to stick with the factory setup. Curious why you decided to modify (in a major way) after you already completed journeys with mostly OEM setups?

That's a shame Greg, after all that hard work.

Pick up the pieces, dust yourself down, hold your chin up and move on.

Good luck for your adventure!

Ah man, what a shame - hopefully this won't derail your plans, keep your head up mate and remember it is better to try & fail than to not try at all. All the best.

Thanks everyone for the support. Most of you said exactly what I've been thinking over the last couple of months, especially SSF556 - haha.

A friend said to me yesterday "Things like this happen all the time, it's how we react that makes us who we are".
I thought about that for the day, and I feel much better now.

I have a plan to move forward, hopefully it comes together.

If someone buys my JK as a diesel/HEMI/LS project that will help a lot :)

I've been wondering the same thing lately :D
Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

At the time, I was convinced I was making the vehicle simpler with the mechanical diesel. I figured that no computer, no emissions stuff, etc. etc. would result in a simpler vehicle that was bullet proof and easy to work on. In hindsight, that doesn't really make sense in a vehicle as electronically-controlled as the JK.
I was also extremely bullish about the whole thing, even when multiple people tried to kindly point out I was going down a path fraught with pitfalls. Somehow, I convinced myself I knew better, and that more modifications was better. Hmmmmm.

I have learned some major life lessons during all of this. With any luck, they're ones I'll never forget.

Glad to read you are moving forward.
Something to consider.
That engine has a great reputation for reliability. Was what happened a "one off issue", or are there issues with the swap that have the potential to cause future issues?

Before resigning to sell, it might be worth taking the time to research your options. Hard to replace what you've already got for anywhere near the money you'll get by selling this one.

My vote is to buy a 2007/2008 WK CRD...

Honestly your best bet is to fly to JNB and buy a used Land Cruiser or Hilux...get is setup the way you want it and hit the road.

It was a one-off issue unrelated to the swap.

One of the diesel return lines, a small rubber hose, came off an injector, causing the diesel leak.
I assume it simply wasn't pushed entirely onto the little barb - I did it myself, which has nothing to do with the swap.
Also because I did it myself, it's not reasonable to expect it to be covered under the warranty from the shop that did the swap.
I messed up, and I feel like an idiot for it.

I've spent hundreds of hours stressing about how to move forward.
You're absolutely right I'm going to lose an enormous amount of money by walking away - and with the help of friends and family, I've decided that's the best way forward.
Yes, the other options are worse, if you can believe it.

Thanks for the input,

-Dan
