Typical Coolant Temperature on an 80 Series/ FZJ80 Landcruiser?

Clutch fan and radiator are original. I have 189K on the clock. I just drained the fluid and added a fresh round of coolant/water mix. I am not pulling the loads now, but I didn't hit 200 last night. It is set to be hotter today, so I will drive it around and see how it fares.

Perhaps it is time to upgrade both the radiator and the fan clutch?

A cool engine is a happy engine and is a key factor in longevity. At 189k it might be worth considering a new radiator if you want to keep her for the long haul. I dropped ~$500 for a nice new OEM unit and mine already had the blue fan clutch. It hurt at the time, but I like the piece of mind and sub-200* temps.

Since I finally got a scangauge...No fan clutch mod/appears to be an aftermarket clutch (silver), 3 core radiator, PHH replaced, toyota red coolant...
Cool evening temps in the 60s here in Flagstaff around town for 1 hour tonight...stop and go and didn't make it over 185F...
How much does ambient temp affect water temps...? ie... At highway speeds, no load, no grade...is 80F or 100F air temp going to make a big difference? Guess I will find out on Sunday...I will be driving from FLG to ALB during the heat of the day...

I have found that heat soak or the amount of solar insolation (BTU/ft) to be the biggest factor in coolant temps. In Phoenix there is a big difference in cooling ability between 100° at midnight verses 100° at noon. A clutch mod will make the biggest difference in the cooling system on a 80 series.

I second changing the fan clutch fluid. It is important to note that in most hot climate regions of the world, the clutches had the higher viscosity fluid; whilst in the US likely due to attempting to help fuel economy--just like the questionable 5w30 recommendation in hot climates--Toyota put less viscous fluid in for the whole US market. IMO in S.CA, AZ, UT, TX, FL, &c, you should be changing out your fluid just as Phil states.

My temps are here:

Thanks for all of the input and advice. I just swapped the fan clutch with a new OEM unit (blue hub) and swapped the fluid for 15k fluid. I drained out 2-3 quarts of fluid, including the overflow, and added fresh Toyota Red. I just took a trip this week to Wyoming where I encountered temps as high as 213 but on average around 200-206 range. It appears the clutch was in fact due for replacement but I am still thinking a radiator is in order.

Roger,

At this point of your investigation a replacement radiator sounds in order. Good work on a methodically approach to your troubleshooting.

My 97 with original radiator was running between 190 and 210 in the summer last year. I replaced the radiator this winter with a 93/94 rad and the temp stays right around 181-188 unless it is very hot. I have yet to see it above 200 even during 100 degree days.

Readings off Scangauge from my 1997 FZJ80:
Ambient temps below 80-85*, engine runs around 186*
Ambient temps 85-100*, engine runs around 190*

Recently replaced all engine hoses and running 50/50 Toyota RED/distilled water. Ive never seen the temps go above 200* even sitting still in 100* heat with AC blowing full blast.

My readings were quite a bit higher yesterday on a 300 mile trip from Flagstaff to Albuquerque...
Scangauge showed right around 198-204 for most of the trip...rising to 216 during some of the longer grades outside ALB.
As PM I have only done a coolant flush and PHH...replaced with Red...the radiator appears to be aftermarket but is three core from what I can see in the top...I would like to get these temps down so I guess a trip to American Toyota is in order...:)

Flagster...have you done the fan clutch mod? This may help your situation a great deal.

There is quite a bit of information and chat in these threads as is common on Mud, but if you take your time and read through them there is a great deal of information that one can glean from them.

In the fifth link, a Mud member "Landtank" (who is a fan clutch guru, not to mention TLC master) talks about adjusting the timing on the fan clutch, below is a thread that discuss this topic in vast detail.

In the above linked threads there is tons of info and more can be had with a search of Mud, so find some free time and get reading.

Thanks Pete...
I have been doing lots of reading and actually went over to American Toyota this morning as I am in ALB for work this week...I wish I had this kind of customer service at Toyota in Flagstaff but that is a different story...
Long story short but I now have a new blue hub fan clutch that I will attempt to put in in the back of the Marriott parking lot tonight. I am not too concerned making the trip back to FLG as my coolant temps never got much over 206 but would like to see the difference the clutch makes over the 300 miles of similar driving...Not sure I will do the clutch mod unless I don't see any improvement...and even then my next step might be a new radiator...

Flagster...I will be interested in hearing about what temps do with the addition of the blue hub.

But before you go and spend all that money on a new radiator I would strongly encouraging you to at least try draining the stock oil from the fan clutch and replace with a heavier weight oil, such as 15000 cst. These oils that are refered to in the threads that a linked to, can be had a most R/C hobby shops, and are meant for R/C car differentials. That should be a good starting point for the Arizona climate you are in. This is a project that at most takes an hour, however the longer you allow the old oil to drain the more fresh oil gets to go back in.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Is anyone running hood vents? Seems like some over on mud have recommended running vents to move more air...hmm
Just thinking outloud...Big Black is suffering in this heat...can't wait to get back to some cool mountain air:)

Does running a thicker fan clutch fluid hurt gas mileage at all?

In the PNW my temps are between 185-190. In the SW with 100 ambient temps I was getting between 190-200. With the AC on going uphill I hit 208 before I turned the AC off and suffered the heat.

I'm running 188-193 pretty consistently. Although we did a trip to Mammoth a few weeks ago and temp hit 223 going uphill in 100+ fully loaded with gas and wood bundles up on the roof rack. Notably, I have an ARB, winch and 7" lights and the winch controller that reduce the stock airflow by at least (guessing) 35%.

I have a new radiator and a cheapo clutch...green 50/50 + water wetter, so I added an electric pusher last weekend. Haven't driven it yet with the pusher but will post numbers when I do.
