Typical Coolant Temperature on an 80 Series/ FZJ80 Landcruiser?

cnskate....After over 20K miles using heavier fan clutch oil, I have noticed no change in mileage, I still get between 15 and 17MPG.

The PO of my truck installed electric pusher fans. They don't change the operating temps of the vehicle at all, except maybe a few degrees at idle. They do help prevent temperature spikes after shutdown. I'm not sure how important that is.

Thanks, I'll be sure to do this before my next desert trip.

If I keep the speeds under 65 mph I'm getting 17-18MPG with a lift and ARB but nothing on the roof, so I don't want to lose that with $4 gas being the new reality. I think my Landtank MAF and Magnaflow muffler might help.

Thanks for all of the input and advice. I just swapped the fan clutch with a new OEM unit (blue hub) and swapped the fluid for 15k fluid. I drained out 2-3 quarts of fluid, including the overflow, and added fresh Toyota Red. I just took a trip this week to Wyoming where I encountered temps as high as 213 but on average around 200-206 range. It appears the clutch was in fact due for replacement but I am still thinking a radiator is in order.

These are pretty much the exact temps I was getting on a trip to ALB and back this week...steady around 204 +/- 2-4 deg F...unless a long grade...

I am going to do the oil swap before replacing the new fan clutch I bought...
Moody, how much oil did you need?...I can't find a link on Mud other than the timing adjustment...

Thanks
Matt

I rec'd the oil from AJIK Overland Exchange. I am not sure on what quantity the container was. I do know it was the 15,000 weight.

From what I read, it was 35ml in the clutch.

Depending on how long you allow the oil that is in the fan clutch to drain, will untimely determine how much of the new oil gets to go in.

For my blue hub fan clutch last summer, I first drained all of the old oil into a old Tupperware via gravity drain at room temp. The I stuck the fan clutch halves in a warm (not hot) oven until the valve opened completely. Then I removed and allowed to gravity drain to get as much excess removed as possible. After the fan clutch had cooled down, then I wiped all viable excess oil off with a lint free rag and proceeded to add approximately 50mL of Team Losi 15000 cst oil to the clutch.

From my research, I have seen volume range from the upper 30s to about 50. The range in volumes is most likely due to the draining process.

But the bottom line is cooler engine temps, so if you are seeing a drop, than that is all that matters.

Truck hit 217 degrees a few times on my way to PA with trailer in Tow.
Truck does the "Roar" upon starting.
Fan clutch less than a year old.
Radiator flushed less than a month ago.
New T-Stat less than 6 months ago.
New oil cooler and oil cooler housing 6 months ago.
I don't believe that Toyota red cools anymore than anything else on the market(so i'm green!), though it may be more corrosion friendly(25 year master toyota tech agrees with me).

Found problem to be the Fan Clutch. These things are just pure junk.
Do the LandTank mod and you may get 5 years out of it. I have heard of these straight out of a Toyota box defective.

Removed the radiator tonight. I can visibly see the little holes on the inside gunked up with a light grey/greenish jive. I really can't complain about having to replace it, 14 years out of a radiator is a solid run. The new OEM radiator looks so nice.

Have you been loyal to Toyota red? It seems when coolant is changed from Toyota red light grey/greenish jive is more common.

Yes, I have always used the Toyota Red. The PO had the truck serviced religiously at the Lexus dealer before I bought it, and it had the red in it when I bought it.

I am off to go begin putting it all back together...

Good to hear.
Like you said it has had a good solid run for 14 years:luxhello:

Dumb question but how hard it is to pull the fan clutch out of the cruiser? I don't have my FSM right now. I have a new blue fan clutch but since I am in Vegas, I should probably upgrade the oil just in case.

I didn't find it to be too difficult. Getting the old radiator out....that was another story.

I am pleased to say I finished the job, and a quick run around the block temps stayed just shy of 190, a/c on. It was much cooler this afternoon, so we will see how the 90 degree day tomorrow treats it.
