10R17.5 come in at 858mm tall and 9.5R17.5 come in at 842mm tall, so there is a height difference of about 16mm.
I noticed the 10's look pretty snug in the rear arches on yours and my panel van might possibly have less clearance than your truck. Mercedes only seem to list 9.5 as an official size for Vario 4x4s. Did you know they would fit before you got them or did you just take a gamble?
The VSX are 870mm (was out measuring to ensure I remembered correctly). I Guess there can be some variance between tyres of same size from different manufacturers.
Many varios (also vans) are converted to 19.5 rims with 285/70. Those are 895mm tall and wider.
Gretar from Iceland has even managed to squeez in 275/80R20 with some modifications to the plastic wheel arch and possibly the bumper. Those are close to 950mm.
Based on that I felt safe with the 10R17.5 and I have not been able to get the tyres rubbing so far.
I am not sure, but the varios from 1997 might sit slightly higher than the older ones. They made some changes to the 4x4 versions when they did the facelift and started calling them Vario I think.
870 for the VSX is quite a bit bigger than the Goodyear. Best not to mix brands then!
Did you notice much difference in the ride when you up sized to the 10R's? My panel van feels like it has no suspension with the 205/70/17.5's that are currently on it. It is a VERY bouncy ride.. It's only when you put a lot of weight in the back that it calms down a bit but you need quite a bit of weight. 19.5's would be even worse by the sound of it.
