Question for you guys. How is the 5.4 working out? I have been doing alot of web browsing not sold on any of the engine options. 7.3 would be ideal since I'm familar with that motor, but pretty rare. 6.0 to expensive to make bulletproof versus a gas motor. V10 horrible mileage, but no worries on power. Sooo how is the 5.4? Looking to do EB with ujoints 8" kit on 37's. Thanks for any input!

Ive towed with 9 guys, 9 kayaks on a car hauler, and a week worth of gear each in a 5.4eb. It did suprisingly well on our devils river fishing trip last year.

If you're not expecting stellar fuel mileage I don't see why it wouldn't be fine. I would however plan on a gear swap to compensate for tire size. I think ours had 4.10'ish gears stock so a 4.88 wouldnt be out of the question.

I'm thinking 6" on 35's 5.4 RB myself

The 5.4L is a good engine. Our van drives great. It could use a little more power and probably better gearing but it does fine for our uses. Not that great on fuel mileage (~12-13 day-to-day driving) but that's what I expected when I bought a giant van.

I have had a 5.4 for 7 years now. I have the 6" with 35s, I would do a v10 or diesel. It will tow lighter loads fine, under 6,000 pounds. Depends on what you will do with it. If it'll never be loaded down much you'll probably be just fine. I took a trip last summer to bike in canada with 6 people 6 mountain bikes and a ton of gear. I got between 8 and 11 mpg. I had to push it hard to keep it at freeway speeds and I think if I had the v10 or diesel it would have been a lot better cause I wouldnt have had to push the thing so hard. For my next one I will get a diesel or v10. Just be patient and wait for what you want, it might take a little while but you'll be forever greatful.

The 5.4 is a great engine, easy & cheap to maintain but the "power" is subjective. For my van, it works fine as a DD rig that doesn't see any towing. 6" lift on 35's with 4.88's.

Thanks guys I appreciate the input!!! Our fire dept has a 03 7.3 eb that just turned 70k Ive been trying to get them to sell off with no luck. In reality I have about 2 years (new baby in july #3) but a van on 37's would be awesome with the kids! Ive seen some great deals on 5.4 and regearing would be a problem.

Not really too concerned about tire price, heck i have 6 humvee rims with brand new 37" goodyears on them in the garage lol. Just like my H3T, when I buy a van its going to be a second vehicle soo tires last awhile.

What type of front bumper is the tribe of 5 ambo getting?

My last van had the 5.4 it was a good motor. Towed my boat (21 foot) easily.
I only had tires that were about 33" tall, but I believe the gears were 3.73's
I'm sure with proper gearing it will be great!

Too rich for my blood, the extra weight, cost, and wear/tear on steering and braking components is outside my budget compared to 35's on just about anything.
