Unsettling find...

I was out scouting for a deer hunt, and calling coyotes, and happened upon this:

This was not the first set of skeletal remains I have come across in this area. It is a popular travel corridor for illegal border crossers, and is about 60 miles from the border. That's a lot of desert to cross with whatever water you can carry. Unfortunately, some make the mistake of trying it in the summer.

Legally and morally, yes. I report them to the county sheriff's office. Unfortunately, they always want me to show them where, which means I have to drive back out there again. There is no cell signal out there.

Wow, what unit were you drawn for? I have never stumbled upon human remains anywhere, but I tend to stay well away from the border areas if I can.

Those bones appear to have been there for a good amount of time based on the level of sun bleaching and the fact that the skull is partially buried. I hope this doesn't come off as disrespectful or morbid, but thanks for sharing the picture. Although it's a sad discovery, I get sort of excited when I find bones in the wild. "Neat" hardly the word I'd use to describe this particular find, but bleached bones sure do make for unique photos.

Both times, it was in 37A south of I-10. And those who watch the news probably heard about the four bodies recently found near Gila Bend. With a possible big increase in border security looming, and summer just getting started, I'm afraid this may be another bad year.

Couldn't you just give them a lat/long from your GPS?

I wonder if the reason they want you to go out there with them is because that way, if they get to the site and then think you may be a suspect, they can put the "habeus grabbus" on you right there instead of having to go look for you. ;)

I gave them the coordinates, I sent them a pic from my cell phone, heck I even drew the route on a topo map and emailed it to them. I don't think they are all that tech savy. I'm sure I could have refused to go back out there, but they sent a lone female deputy out there, and she might have driven and/or walked in circles for a while before finding the spot which was not by a road. I'm not dissing on her, this area is just remote with nothing but two-tracks meandering about. I originally gave the coords to Pinal County, who proceeded to mis-key them in their system. When they finally figured that out, they discovered the remains were actually in Pima County. The whole thing took up most of the day. If I run into any more remains out there, I will be tempted to just walk the other way...

Sadly, there are so many undiscovered UDA bodies in that area, it seems like a waste of resources to actually report it. Pinal County couldn't find their butts with both hands..... no wait, that's not nice of me to say that. If they can't use your thorough directions to find it, maybe they...... no, strike that, just speaking my mind. Too bad it ruined your hunt though.
