Yellowstone National Park
Our friend Felicia (http://www.bellatreks.com) in Livingstone had recommended us to cross into Yellowstone National Park in the North East corner on the Beartooth Highway instead of the “normal” tourist route in through Mammoth.
The Beartooth Highway was a really scenic drive and we crossed over the Beartooth Pass at 3342 meters. The scenery along the highway was more dramatic than Yellowstone, except it has not all the thermal activity as Yellowstone has.
After seeing kilometer upon kilometer with forest up in the north it was amazing to get to Yellowstone and see the thermal landscape with hot pools, mud pools, terraces, geysers, and of course, all the wild life.
Along the NE Entrance Road we saw big herds of bison gracing along the river.
Sometimes wildlife and masses of tourists are not the best combination, but the wildlife always has the right of way (at least the bison...).
After a day of driving we stopped by a hot spring called Boiling River in Mammoth and soaked in there for two hours. While we were soaking a big group on Elk came down to the river to drink.
Funny enough, they passed just next to all the tourists in the hot spring, and continued their dinner a bit further down the river.
The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone River was pretty impressive and worthy of its name.
We were also quite impressed by the Lower Waterfall. Norway has loads of waterfalls and sometimes when we are tourists in other countries and are told that we have to see the waterfall, we are quite often disappointed. But not in Yellowstone!
Last evening in the Park it snowed a bit and in the morning it was ice on our tent. South, south, south, south!!
