Dude, just sign up as early as you can and then wait. I started off as #30 and by the time the trip came I was #17 (I had to get in line behind everybody else who had gone on the trip before). Follow along on upoverland.org until they announce the opening of registration and mark that date on your calendar so it will remind you. Then you have several months to prep your rig and acquire any gear you might need while you wait. Even if you don't make it in, you're still ready to go on some other adventure.

Outside of signing up for the trip via the UPO forum, there are all of the gps logs from the trips so duplicating them is pretty easy.
