I was just curious who has upgraded their reverse bulbs and if you gained enough output to make it worth it? Also, post a picture of the light output if you have one.

I haven't done it but I'm planing on adding a secondary LED reverse light to the back. Kinda on the top. I'll have to find a picture.

Hey jeep-N-montero, what about that "Spotted" article on the expedition portal. They guy swapped out all of his tail lights for brighter LED's.

I'm not sure what the reverse lights are like on the U.S. models,but on the japanese one they are absolutely tiny,and suck big time! I don't really have anywhere to mount one on the back so I went for some tiny little things I got on ebay for like €3. I wasn't expecting much,but they are actually great! Drilled a small hole in the plastic bumper,and put them through,and soldered them into some existing wiring I had for a foglight that had broken off

I'll get you pics this weekend. They're really bright. I'm going to also use them for some rear fog lights after I do a little wiring.

I don't remember the details and part numbers, but years ago I discovered that the local parts stores had a high-intensity bulb that was a direct replacement (bayonet-style) bulb for 1st gen. 4runners.
It wasn't blindingly bright, but brighter enough to make a real difference when backing up.
On my old CJ-7 I had a utility light mounted in the back. Not wired to the reverse lights, but on a separate switch. I preferred this so that I could only use it when necessary, and not blind people in parking lots.

They're extremely bright compared to the stock incandescents. They could also be used in the rear turning signals, but then you'd have two minature suns for turn signals and it's possible they'll blink faster due to drawing less of a load on the blinker relay than a standard bulb.

I really want to see some pictures, from a few videos on youtube it seems that the Cree bulbs produce more of a spot type lighting pattern than a flood pattern and not sure how I feel about that.
I'll see if I can get a pic for you later. Cree bulbs do put out more of a concentrated beam compared to an incandescent flood. But they do flood if the glass lens over them is designed too.
If you want to retain a stock light pattern but increase the intensity of the light ouput, GE Nighthawk bulbs are about 20-25% brighter than standard incandescents: you can get a pair of 1156 base bulbs for around $7.00.

I can't get good pictures with my phone. The light projection is a lot better in real life vs these pictures. The stock housings do a good job of diffusing the light from a spot type pattern

Any downside with going to the 10 or 12 watt Cree bulb?
