Upper Peninsula Winter

I can't believe I just found this thread. Epic beauty, thanks for sharing these!

I don't know if it's possible to have favorites, but I really like the sand/snow swirls at AuTrain and the alien mushroom-capped rocks.

Don't think I'm hardy enough to enjoy UP winters, but I sure do enjoy your pictures. :victory:

I didn't really capture the transparency of the ice too well. Very cool.

Certainly the curse of the adventurous: not being able to be in two (or infinitely more) places at once!!

Thanks :)

You didn't think winter was over, did you?

I have a decent view of the lake from my house and could tell the north wind was doing a number on the water. Decided to grab my camera gear and head out to Miners Castle / Beach area and see what it looked like. I have to say, the wind-chill was beyond what I thought it would be, and the driving needles of snow were fun. The waves weren't the biggest I've seen, but they were doing a number on the lake ice.

Shortly after taking this shot, the waves knocked this ice bridge to pieces.

Miners Castle on the receiving end of some big water.

The larger chunk of ice further out was easily the size of a house and it was getting pounded. The smaller pieces in closer were car / truck size. I wouldn't want to be in between any of that ice in the water!!

Big swells!

I was covered in about as much ice after I got done shooting out there!

The big lake, getting rid of the ice one wave at a time.

And a video from out at the point east of Miners Beach. I can't begin put the size into perspective...these waves were huge.

Wow, that churning water in the video is scary.
Great shots Tom, hopefully you thawed right out yourself. :coffeedrink:

And we wondered how the ice went away in the spring? I think I get it now.:Wow1:

Thanks for sharing this. We don't see this very often in Arizona. :xxrotflma
