URGENT - LWB GEN I rear diff failure - need options

Hey guys,
It has ben a while, life got a bit more complicated than usual.
I need your urgent help on this project as i need to get it back on the road before July is over.

Yesterday the rear diff failed, likely the LSD. The cause? really quick...a few months back a freak accident happened, driving near home I came a cross a big mattress plastic bag that came airborne towards me and I couldn't dodge it. It went under and found itself wrapped on my rear drive shaft getting tighter as I came to a stop an 1/8 of a mile down the road. The stupid plastic got so tight that it took me 2 hours to cut it out and it put so much pressure on the unit that I had to replace the joint and diff seal. Somehow this episode cause something to move inside the pumpkin that it messed up the LSD, maybe something moved in the wrong direction on the internals.

Now I need to replace it or fix it but I am checking my options. I am looking for a GEN I diff with LSD or maybe a GEN II diff with LSD or locker. For the latter, I need to know which of the models I can use. I have looked around and it seems 92-94 GEN II might be available with LSD or locker plus the extra bonus are the disk brakes.

Have any of you guys done the conversion to GEN II? What else do I need? brakes dist block, maybe? I came across a 2000 Montero Sport, will it have what I need?

Thanks guys,

Javy

What motor is your Gen 1?

Gen 1
2.6, Leaf Rear = 8" Rear Diff
3.0, Coil Rear = 9" Rear Diff

Gen 2 / 2.5 = Coil Rear
3.0 = 9" Rear Diff
3.5 = 9.5" Rear Diff

'97-'99 Sport = Leaf Rear
2.4 / 3.0 = 9" Rear Diff
3.5 = 9.5" Rear Diff

'00+ Sport = Coil Rear
2.4 / 3.0 = 9" Rear Diff
3.5 = 9.5" Rear Diff

Providing your location might also be useful...

Hey guys,
Mine is the 90LWB with the 3.0 and it has 4.625 rear axle gear ratios. I found a diff out of a 95 Montero with 3.0 and with LSD that it likely has 4.63 will that work?

Oh, I am in Buford GA.

If I were you and in Buford, GA, I'd reach out to Thomas Siebert / Curbside Auto in Sautee, GA.

He seems to be well regarded, is active on many Montero FB groups, primarily focuses on Gen 1 and Gen 2 Monteros as far as I can tell, and the pics he posts indicate he has a pretty substantial Montero parts yard...
