Here we go again

To trot out the same old defense against peoples opinion of a products pricing, be it for Icon, Earthroamer, Viking shackle or $600 camp chair, really only addresses half the issue. I am not an economist but I did stay awake during a few courses in the 90's. People have opinions about their willingness to pay asking price for these products and that's perfectly fair. Not only are values of products set but so is an individual's value of his or her own money set. I may determine an item to be over-valued but my criteria is certainly different than someone with Sultan of Brunei type monetary resources. I think everyone is entitled to look at the asking price of any product and determine if (in their opinion) it is overpriced.

What's funny is that about 90% of the time, somebody will say, heck, I can do just as good for cheaper. Then, after they spend the time doing the research, sourcing the parts, paying shipping, doing the assembly to the same level of finish, using the necessary tools and and machines, with the attendant costs in space rental or lease, and finally, be honest with themselves about factoring in their own time on a dollars-per-hour basis, they almost always find out that, crap, it's even MORE expensive to do it the same way!

And anyway, when your target audience numbers in the dozens instead of the thousands, ya gotta charge a little more per piece to make it worthwhile. I doubt anyone at ICON is getting filthy rich, even at 85k a copy.

And to say that someone who can afford it does not value a dollar as much as someone who can't afford an ICON, REALLY raises my ire. Get another paper route, if you need to.

Reign in that ire...not what I was gettin' at. I'm saying everyone assigns his own value to his own dollars whether he's in the newspaper business or not. You may feel ICON value is valid, others may not. If you let your ire raise over an individuals opinion, you invite someone elses ire to raise over your opinion.
