Used oil storage

My shop has a Shenandoah waste oil burning furnace so I dump my used oil in the 750 double wall tank just outside. Our winters use about 1000 gallons per year to heat a a 100x50 shop.

I bring oil from home in one of those inexpensive Blitz drain pan storage containers. I usually get 2-3 oil changes in one before I take it to the shop to empty. Those pans are handy. I keep three of them around.

I use the old style kerosene 5gal jugs. I have 2 of them and they are clear (ish) with the thread on cap. and I have a 33gal barrel as well that will get a cheapie SS kitchen sink and drain directly into the barrel.

Most fire halls/stations around here take old oil. Check them out in your area.

Another place might be a construction company for road dust control or asphalt repairs. :costumed-smiley-007

I use 15 gallon used plastic drums, they work well because they're still light enough to dump when full. Most farms have some of these drums laying around that they get cleaning chemicals in. 5 gallons get filled a little quick but are easier to deal with, the ones that paint thinner comes in work well with a pour spout and they seal really good.

I just picked one of these things up from expedition exchange:

Same form factor as a jerry can so I'll be able to store it on my roof rack with the other cans (just in case I have to crack open the rear diff on a trail or something).

Seems like a well thought out product option - and for $12, it's hard to say no. :coffee:

See this is similar to all the products in Auto stores that leak or break. Now the E.E. product may be better but the $12 price has me wondering. I started this thread after returning from the store to buy a Wedco oil pan and 20 min after changing the oil on our vehicles, the oil had leaked out of the cap all over my garage floor. I did have it threaded properly. So i had a hell of a clean up job. Over the years I have had alot of these pans just crack or break of leak like sives and I'm tired of it. I think I am going to find a nice stainless pan and get a sceptor can of some kind.

My dad had a couple of steel oil drain pans, and I found 2 more at a garage sale, best things for changing oil.

We used to use a 55 gal drum, and give it to a guy who had a used oil furnace in his shop.

Now that we keep the tractors at the cabin, we have no way of loading a full barrel into the truck.:snorkel:

Now we use good 5 gallon buckets for temp storage. We have 6 right now, so when 4-5 of them get full, we make a run and dump the used oil, and bring the buckets back with us.

Between my dad and I, we have 10 vehicles, a dumptruck, 2 tractors, and misc. small engine units. (lawn mowers, gennerators, etc.)

So we make 2-3 trips to the recyclers every year, more if we have to change out hydraulic oil:snorkel:

Back when my wife and I were roadracing we generated lots of used oil since the oil was changed in both bikes after each race. I had a metal 5 gal gas can that I kept used oil in to keep the number of trips to the recycling center down. If you go that way, make sure you clearly label the can!

I use all my old motor oil to kill weeds around the yard.

Just kidding :p

This actually works...it's not just an urban legend...I also use oil to keep the dust down in my driveway too...just use my tractor sprayer...if anyone want's to get rid of their oil...I will take it...
