Utility cap for expedition use?

Has anyone used a utility cap for overland/expedition use? I've been wanting a cap for a while and I stumbled accross one of these bad boys for $250. i'll be picking it up tomorrow after work. I see a lot of potential for pullout drawers and storage, as well as a sleeping platform. Has anyoneused one, or have any ideas for how to best utilize it? I'm thinking one side will have all my kitchen items with water hookups ect. While th other will be tools. Pehapds a fold down work bench type surface. Pull out drawers in the bed with a sleeping platform/cargo room on top.

I am a little concerned about the lack of rer visability. The side mirrors on Tacomas are a bit lacking. Anyone have any advice there? I'm very excited about this find and the project in general.

What are you going to do for ventilation? It's going to get hot and stuffy in there if you're trying to sleep.

Sub'd for this cause I was thinking about changing out my ranch Sierra for something like that with a roof rack on it

Thats what I was thinking when I bought mine for $100. My camper conversion will have cabinets that hold kitchen items on the drivers side so you can open the side door and access all of it. Cooking will primarily be done outside so this will be perfect (going to have a light in the door that will give light to a cooking area) but will be accessible from the inside in case of inclement weather. Cant wait to see what you do!

Right now I'm thinking of cutting out the back wall of the cabinets and replacing them with expanded metal of some kind. This will still allow me to hang items and install some shelving, but will also give some ventilation. A 12v fan of some kind is probably also in the cards to provide some cross air flow. I'm 6'3 so sleeping in the bed with the door closed is a no-go. Eventually I'll build a roof rack and get a rooftop tent but for now that should give options.

I pick it up tonight. Once I get it on the truck and do some looking and thinking I'll have a better idea of how this is going to work.

I thought a few of you might get a laugh out of this so here goes. I picked up the cap last week. THe mounting hardware was missing (I still have to figure out how I'm going to mount it)but fortunately I had half a dozen ratchet straps in the truck. I set it in place like it was properly intalled and ratchet strapped it into place. Two hours, one thunderstorm and a nerve racking stop on the side of the road latter to resecure it and the cap was home. Which led to the second problem.

I'm pretty new to Charleston SC and don't have any friends in town to call and help me move something like this. SO I had to get creative. I also just moved into a new house and most of my tools are packed away and inaccessable. All Icould get to was my cordless drill and sawzall. A trip to HArbor Freight and Lowes mixed with a little ingenuity, cussing and sweat lead to this redneck solution. It helped my get the cap off my truck and into my backyard. I had to disassemble part of the fence, drag it through then reassemble, but I got the job done.

Behold the redneck engineering:

More to come later. I'm still planning and gathering parts. Thought y'all could use the laugh.
