My girlfriend and I have spent quite a few nights in the van at zero temps(not -40). We have a heated 12vdc mattress that runs off the house batteries. We stay plenty warm while sleeping, even though everything outside the cooler will freeze. I have to start the van first thing for her before she'll get out of bed and put her clothes on. When the temps drop and the wind picks up, everything freezes, and fast.
The coldest weather I've climbed in was -38 actual temp, and with the 45+mph wind, it was probably close to -60. Cold enough that your eyes would instantly freeze shut if you took your googles off. Our food and water froze and it was inside our jackets.
Coldest tent camping was around 0, but with my TNF Inferno sleeping bag, it was very tolerable.
