Ujoint,
Normally I would totally agree with you and say no one would EVER check the gvw of your van however last month my dad was on his way out to Utah with his jeep in Tow on a trailer and a car in front of him stood on the brakes in the middle of a two lane highway to let a funeral home procession go the other direction ******???? Anyway he could not stop in time and rear ended the clown. The first thing the cop did was harass my dad for saying his gvwr on his plates were not high enough to pull a CJ7 behind a half ton truck. Some how dad talked his way out of the ticket but if the cop wanted to be a real *** I am sure he could of persued it further. That was in Missouri and I know they can be a pain in the ******** with bumper height laws and such, and the Mo dot will pull you over for what ever they want to check. As a kid I came to be on a first name basis with a dot, they love kids in jeeps on 40'S with 400+ horsepower. Anyway here in colorado I have not ran into anything like that so I would say it would never really be an issue as far as I can tell. It only takes one nazi wannabe state trooper to really leave a bad taste in your mouth and dent in your wallet.

Sorry to hear that your dad had to rear end that guy, was he over his limit? I was once pulled over in IL and the trooper asked me if I had put "air shocks" on my van to get it so high. So I know what you mean about some officers of the law.

How do you deal with the need for a higher legal GVWR? Regardless of the axles and springs you need to deal with the law and the legal GVWR.

GVWR is a rating by the manufacturer for specific vehicle/models. You can put Rockwell axles, F550 springs, and reinforce the frame under an F150....and it's still an F150 as far as "legalities" go, i.e. your registration. Well, in the two states I'm familiar with anyway (FL and TN). There could be some special loopholes around changing GVWR....if there is, let us know!

Sounds good! The search can be painful sometimes, but keep at it and you'll find what you want eventually!!!
