VARIOS 4x4 VARIOS

Unfortunately I think you'll find they never came to the US officially so you might be waiting a while to track one down. Although they were available for quite a few years there are very few 4x4 panel vans in the UK (maybe 10 or so). I was looking around for about 5 years before this one came along. You're best bet is Germany, mobile.de is a good place to start. They are very spacious inside, enough room to sleep across the van from side to side.

A sprinter would be a good option. You can get side extensions from somewhere like flarespace.com to maximise space and they are tall enough to stand in. Better gas mileage than a vario too.

My issues with the Sprinter are ground clearance, overall off-road capability including approach and departure angles, lack of a locking diff, and overall stability of the high-roof model. I think the wheel track on the 814 is wider making it more stable. Wheel options look to be greater too and the overall shape of the box would seem to be more functional. I have not verified all of this yet. I am going to start looking for specs and dimensions for the various Vario models. If you know of links to sites that might help me with the dimensions I would appreciate any pointers..

I agree that sprinters are a great option, I just think for me and my use a solution based on a Sprinter will not meet my needs for as long as something the size of the 814.

P20 or P30 step van, Cummins diesel, auto or manual trans, big open square box, 12 - 18 foot body.

Get out the welder or get out your checkbook and make it 4WD if that is required. Rear lockers are available from several manufacturers.

Import a 15 year old Vario into Canada or a 25 year old truck into the US.

What's the deal with the 25 year rule? I just asked over in general forum for pointers on how to research importing a vehicle in the USA (California). If I buy a relatively new diesel form the EU won't that be equal in emissions etc to what is sold here?

As for the welder I would have to get my check-book out for that too.. and then another check for classes.

25yr rule was a compromise. The german auto makers were crying about people undercutting their business by importing cars into the US from Europe. They wanted it blocked 100%. US congress thought that was extreme and settled on the 25yr rule. 25yrs and older import to your hearts content. It had nothing to do with emissions or safety systems.

Simple, You CANNOT import a vehicle that was not originally sold in the UNITED STATES unless it is at least 25 years old. There are a few exceptions for R&D, car shows, race teams, campers imported for one year of travel, etc., but if you are a U.S. Citizen and want to keep, use and register the vehicle here, it must be 25 years old to legally import into the USA.

It has nothing to do with EU regulation, emissions, crash testing or anything else of the sort. Now, that said, there are vehicles here NEWER than 25 years, that were not originally sold in the US. So, there are ways of getting around it. Some easy, some complex and expensive, some blatantly illegal.

You will want to hire a reputable customs broker, preferably one who is familiar with importing vehicles from the country you are purchasing from and the type of vehicle you are buying. You could also contact companies like Eurotruck or Vermont Unimog and see if they would be willing to buy the vehicle for you and then you buy it from them as a used car, with all of the proper tag, license, docs, etc already completed.

I have never done it personally, but have some friends who have and it is not a fast, simple or easy process by any means.
