Vehicle donors for trailer axle (5 x 4.5" BP & 60-65"W)

The only solution that I'm seeing to enable using the unmodified Jeep Wheels without spacers is to build the axle yourself. Build it to use the unit bearings used on the front of the Jeep and then get some of the outer front axle assemblies.

Now thats a good idea... Couple stub shafts, and unit bearings. weld the stubs to the axle tube. Would be fairly easy to do. What about brakes?

If you go the Jeep unit bearing route, MAKE SURE you put stub shafts in like Stump said. You don't want to see the outcome of what happens when you don't.

I didn't have any problems at all putting TJ Gambler wheels on my 3500lb axle from ABC. I'm not using the factory Jeep center caps, but that wasn't a big deal to me.

You can kinda see it in this pic:

I just grabbed some generic dust caps at the parts store and it works great.

and yep the grease cover sticks through so the cap won't fit

Not sure why you'd want to use a jeep axle as for the cost you can get a fit for purpose trailer axle for less ?

weighs less- won't have a bulge in the middle and no welding bodging required

SCORE!

Enter the wheel stud count and diameter and get a list of all vehicles with that pattern!

VERY cool resource, lmantagne! Thanks! :victory:

Interesting about the Gamblers. Do either of you happen to know the I.D. of the hole? I can't imagine it would be different (or much different) than my Ravines.

I have no issue ditching the Jeep center caps to make it work.

I'll keep doing some homework, as I'd prefer to use a regular trailer axle, if possible.

Thanks for the input!

I went to northern tool and hydraulic today and was surprised at how much trailer stuff they had. 4 whole isles full of everything you could imagine. They had about 15-20 axles in every flavor you can think of in stock too. Not sure if you have one near you or not....

I don't, unfortunately.

I'm going to call abctrailerparts tomorrow to ask some questions, and possibly order one of their axles. I'm still wondering how different the Gambler wheels are from the Ravines.

I did measure the center holes in the Ravines, and the pilot hole is only 1 15/16" in diameter, with the opening behind it widening to 2 13/16". The "stepped" area for this larger diameter is ~7/8" deep. Again, I'm not sure how this compares to the Gamblers.

jeep wheels are hub centric so all should be the same size center hole.

ABC are really helpfull just ask them

I just talked with Randy at ABC. Wow, what a nice guy to deal with! He's going to grab me a couple measurements with the hub and give me a call back so I can confirm my Ravine wheels will mount up. I hope to order the 3500-lb. axle from him today or tomorrow. :victory:
