Vital spares

Imagine you are going to take your Td5 Defender County Station Wagon, year 2005, now with 65,000 km on the clock, on a long (50,000 km?) trip from the Gulf region to Europe and then to the Americas and onward.

You are limited to carrying a maximum of four spare parts, other than filters, a fan belt and hoses.

Which four would those be?

For any 'modern' networked vehicle either a test book or laptop with the approiate software, interface & a copy of the RAVE manual. Not alot of use carrying much else if you can't download the fault codes.... everything else is just a sat phone call away

That makes it a real crap shoot. Probably some of the electronics for the engine. I don't know what all is on the TD5 so can't say which, but I'd expect a failure of one of those would keep you out of service longer than other mechanical or electrical parts.

Is there a size/weight limitation to these 4 parts? If not, spare engine, spare transmission, spare transfercase, and spare ECU.

wheel bearings, propshaft UJ's, spare ECU... and something else.

take things that would completely disable the vehicle. other things can be shipped. more over, know your vehicle, know how to repair/replace parts and know (and accept) your limits.

1. Serpentine belt

2. Proper OEM Oil filters (with crush washers)

3. 2x clutch pumps (yes, bring 2 along, dont ask how I know).

The clutch pump is located North of the Headlight resevoir. :ylsmoke:

I think the best things to bring with you are patience, knowledge, positive perspective and determination.

No matter what tools and parts you may have at your immediate disposal, if your mind is clouded by momentary problems you're screwed anyway.

p.s. and a printed copy of Rave

I understand the heavy interest in ecu's as they are vital, but I have also heard that they rarely blow, except when drowned of course.

What about axleshafts, nobody has mentioned them yet. This is one of the most common offorad issues I see.

Well...you can still drive with a broken half-shaft. Or a dead clutch.
Being limited to only 4 parts I was trying to think of things that would potentially disable you that would be difficult to find locally.

Though I don't really know what the point of this exercise is. LOL
