Interesting. When it does get hot weather tested I will likely see it. Living out in the high desert in California (near the Honda and Hyundai test tracks) I get to see all sorts of good stuff way before it gets released.

This isn't the first time VW has gone after Toyota trucks if you recall the Rabbit truck. I think we know how that went.

I wonder what size truck VW will introduce -- similar to the Tacoma, which is a mid-size pickup these days, or smaller, like the Ranger or new Mahindra. The diesel 4 cylinder engine from VW's small cars would probably work best in a compact truck.

Is the current Hi-Lux, sold by Toyota everywhere except North America, much smaller than the Tacoma?

I see the hilux trucks every once in a while (San Diego is right next to Mexico) - it is not a whole lot smaller, just a bit narrower (I would say closer to pre-2005 taco dimensions), but I am sure you could find the numbers on the internet

The VW Caddy (as in Rabbit P/U) had nothing what so ever to do with Toyota, and are quite neat little trucks (I have a few)...

In the 90's VW "badge engineered" a truck that was a 3rd Gen Toyota Pick-up named the Taro. It was a VW in badges only otherwise it was all toyota.

This "new" truck appears to be the exact same thing, it is by all apearances a New "world Platform" Hilux, and will probably be offered in Europe only just as the previous Taro was.

That's what I know them as but I thought if I referred to them as such it would conjure up images of the Brougham, Seville, DeVilles and the dreaded Cimarron.

They were around $4000 bucks but the Caddy obviously had car like chracteristics....ze German El Camino if you will.

First truck I ever "drove" was an old 79 2wd Toyota Pick up. And you're spot on about the caddy being like a car. Those things are so damn small inside, bu they are fun.

Here's the latest one I helped my Dad build.

I moved to Australia for 8 months and left my MKII Jetta (with more than a few goodies on/in it ) with my dad to drive while I was gone. I come home and he's decided he needs a new motor in the caddy he had bought while I was away... So we yanked the 1.6 for a 1.8 with a big valve head and all the ABD and Techtonics goodies (they're local so it's really great to deal with them). Fun little truck. Mine are shells that a buddy is restoring into one good one to run a bio diesel comuter.

Little car, long bed. In case you don't need all that cubic feet out back, the photo below shows what a GTI version would look like. This was a Revell 1/32 model kit I cut up about 20 years ago.

Maybe by this July I can have all the unreliable bits replaced in my Chalet so I can take it camping - my daily driver '86 GTI has served nicely as an expedition vehicle, but 3 inches of ground clearance has its limitations.... see posts #5, 15, 17 & 18 here http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6667

HAH!!! That is one cool old model man, well done...

Oddly enough, they made a "sport truck" version that had the 83 (MKI) interior and the same motor... Like I've said in some other threads, I have taken most of my VW's far further down that "forrest service road" than I ever should have including taking the afore-mentioned Jetta out camping (it was the only car I had at the time) it probably had 3 inches or less under te pan, but it got there :jump:
