Go to Costco, Bestbuy, Target, Sears or any other emporium of your choice.

Purchase a sufficient number of Motorola FRS radios to test (probably at least two). Don't forget some AA batteries.

Test.

Some people want the short version, some want the long. Kind of a Mounds/Almond Joy situation.

The FRS radios are about $20 each. Buy a couple (they're REALLY handy for all sorts of things, imho) and try them. If they work, then worry about the things that make them better - rechargeable batteries (eneloops), charger, belt case, undercover microphone, etc... If they don't meet the original stated requirements (use on the trail) then maybe you don't need all that other stuff....but the FRS radios are still handy, imho.
