The family and I were in Park City, UT for the week, so I took half a day for myself to visit the Bonneville Salt Flats. I've seen it a million times on TV so wanted to check it out in person.
The highway out to the Flats from Salt Lake City is an 80 mile long straight stretch but had some interesting artifacts along the way.
The salt surface was somewhat spongy. I'd imagine that it differs depending on what part of the flats you're on though.
Being forewarned about the slippery mud that exists below the surface I watched my mirrors to see how much I was sinking in. Originally it was very little (for a 8000lb truck) but as I progressed it got much deeper.
Since my tires started to break thru more and more I decided to stop and take some photos...
... you can see how sticky the mud is underneath
The Silver Island Mountains (in the distance) border the Salt Flats so I decided to check them out as well. I wanted to get some elevation to get a different perspective on the Flats.
The maintained dirt road that goes around the mountains is pretty smooth so the temptation to go fast is there. Just watch out for the washouts as they'll sneak up on you and make for unpleasant speed bumps.
