I need to replace my water pump for the second time. First time was at about 20,000 miles, I now have 109,000 miles. I was wondering if I should get a heavier duty water pump or stay with the stock type?:smiley_drive:

having worked for several repair shops and having seen the widely ranging difference in quality, I'd have to say buy the the best you can afford. Such an integral part needs to be high quality.

I personally have seen the difference in metals, welding rods, still attached, impeller that had too few vanes, etc. on aftermarket pumps.

I'd go factory on this one.

I just put in a pep boys radiator, because the previous radiator was the same model and lasted 10 years. pretty good. So there are exceptions, just have to be careful about discount W. pumps.

Greatest cause of water pump failure

WIth a water pump going out so quickly (20,000 miles), apart from a mfg. defect, the greatest cause of failure is a serpentine belt that is too tight. This puts too much strain on the bearings and eventually will cause a failure.

I believe the tendency is to use a pry bar and winch it as tight as one is able. In most cases this would be too tight.
