Water Pumps...

Hi everyone,

I've been building up my Jeep for "Jeep Camping" for a little while now, and will soon add an AT Chaser trailer. My usual camping experience is canoe-camping, where we manually pump water, sanitize, and then hang the water bag from a tree not too far from the kitchen. Now I'm looking at using Wedco water cans and a water tank on the upcoming trailer. I may even upgrade the trailer with water tanks between the frame rails. So I'm wondering how to manage water *easily* in such an environment. I don't want to be lugging around pots of water. The kitchen will be located under an awning, on the side of the Jeep...

I've been thinking of buying a Shurflo 2088-414-534 as a general purpose water pump. I can mount it in the Jeep for now, and in the trailer later. What do you think? Overkill? :)

Designing a system for water isn't too bad, I just got done with one for my 4Runner, here. The first thing is to look at the typical length you will be camping and needing to pack water. Once you figure out the volume of water you will need, then you can figure out how many tanks you will need. You may not need as much storage as you think. For in the desert, I usually go 1.25gal/day/person for drinking, another .5gal/day for cooking/cleanup, and 1gal/day/person for showers.

In your case, if you end up using multiple tanks on the trailer, you can use a set of valves to control what tanks the water is being pumped from.
