Wouldn't that be a better name for Heidi's 4runner since you had to tug you on Smiley Rock. :sombrero:

End threadjack.

That was my nomination towards the "lets name Heidi's 4runner" poll. However, I am not at liberty to neither confirm nor deny those accusations. :sombrero:

Hello, nice rig you have there. I was wondering if you could share the part numbers for the rear shocks and springs you put on your 4Runner? I have a 99 (same color as yours) and want to put that same lift on it. I am already running 265/75/16 BFG AT's tires with the stock suspension but if I hit a bump hard i bottom out in the rear.

Thanks in advance

Dave S

:safari-rig:

P.S. I just wanted to add I am looking forward to seeing your camping setup too.

Hi Dave,

I believe its Part Number: F4-BE5-2451-H0. Give Wil a call at Sierra he ordered them up for me and should be able to get you a set. As for the springs I got those second hand from SOAZ and after a brief google search I'm not sure where to get them. Maybe he will chime in and point you in the right direction. If not pick up some OME springs those would be ok too!

Heidi
I just had a chance to catch up on some forum reading and I must say your runner is looking tough and ready for the happy trails. I look forward to exploring az with you .
Nice build
thanks
Don

Thanks a lot Don! Anytime you want to hit up a trail please let me know!

I'm sorry it has taken me so long to respond to this thread. I began going through my pics and saw I only had one of the sleeping set up that wasn't very good, so I'm going to take some better pics so you all can get the idea. I have also added a few more small items I need to get pics of so hopefully a real update soon!!

As for the Tugboat...I dunno I was going to stick with a Star Wars theme like the Womp Rat or something....but I could be convinced! ;)

HAHA! Star Wars is equally as cool... We just need to make sure I don't run any more trails in front or behind you, otherwise that name just might stick!

Finally getting around to some updates here! :violent-smiley-031:

April 23, 2009:

I was able to knock out a few quick projects in April just before the Overland Expo. It was going to be my first camping trip in the 4Runner so I wanted to be comfortable!

I liked where Tim (SOAZ) chose to mount his flashlight in the back for quick and easy access so I chose the same:

Obviously one of the greatest mods ever done to the FJ is the Engle fridge so I knew I had to have one in the 4Runner as well. At this point we figured there will probably never be a situation in which we will both need the fridge and not be together so for now we are sharing. I built this little platform in the back to mount the slide lock to and add some additional tie-down points:
IMG_1806.JPG

I had also been thinking for a while on what I was going to do for a camping set-up, and had a few requirements I needed to fill. Since the FJ is pretty much beyond any kind of additional passenger space, the 4Runner needs to be reserved for those times when we need to carry more than 2 people. I thought about building a sleeping platform with a removable portion so I could still use the rear seats but I just didn't want to deal with the additional weight. I'm also just a little too tall to sleep with an air mattress and the seats folded down, so I needed to find a way to still sleep back there, but be elevated above both the wheel-well and the rear seat bottoms. Then I found the Roll-A-Cot. The best of both worlds! I had Corbin at Zebra Sports cut an inch off the legs so I could have just a bit more headroom inside, and when I'm not using it it rolls up to a very packable size! Plus I still have the option of sleeping out under the stars next to the truck on those beautiful spring Arizona nights.

I'm sorry I didn't get a lot of pictures of the sleeping set-up when it was in use, so I'll have to take more on the next trip:

Next little thing was figuring out where to put the Lifehammer. Mock me if you will, but I think these things should be carried in every vehicle. You just never know when you will need one! I wanted to put it in a place that was accessible to both the driver and passenger, so I just stuck it to the inside top of my center console/arm-rest thingy. It wasn't sticking too well off road so I had to add those extra velcro 'latches'....ugly but it gets the job done.

So I like gadgets and had been looking at this little inclinometer for a while and finally picked it up. It works really well and is a great help in making sure I'm on level ground for sleeping in the truck if nothing else. Sorry for the horrible pic!
IMG_1777.JPG

Finally I decided the little handheld Garmin Rino I had was great for Geocaching, but I really wanted a laptop mount in the truck. Corbin at Zebra Sports fabricated this awesome custom mount for the truck, which has everything I was looking for:

It mounts to the seat brackets

It has the double-arm allowing it to swing in almost any direction

Who doesn't want a carbon fiber plate that also moves?

Big thanks again to Corbin for doing such a great job on this!! :wings: I'm currently using my Dell XPS Laptop running Delorme, but I hope to switch to one of the 10" netbooks soon. I'm also using the GlobalSat SIRF III USB GPS Puck which is just velcroed to the dash:

April 24-26, 2009: Overland Expo

Myself and Cypher decided to have a little adventure on the way to the Overland Expo and I finally had a real chance to test out my suspension. We took the Bumble Bee road to Crown King and then Senator's Highway into Prescott. It was a beautiful day for a drive and we were having so much fun I didn't take a single pic! We camped the night and met up the next day with Mark and the rest of the Expo crowd to run the Smiley Rock trail.

After the trail run we all headed to the Mingus Expo campsite and had another fantastic night around the campfire with good food, good drinks and good company!
IMG_1539.JPG

I have to say that night I really appreciated the in-cab sleeping set-up. Why? Because at 6am when I woke up and looked at the fridge temp gauge and the fridge read 31, with the ambient temp at 30 I just reached over and started up the truck, turned on some heat and I was good to go! I know, thats cheating!

So after returning home from the Expo on Sunday, my long-awaited new license plate finally showed up:

Then I got a new hood blackout and some cool new stickers!

Now is where a bit of bad luck starts coming in. It was starting to get hot in Phoenix and the A/C just wasn't blowing cold enough. So I figured no problem, it just needs a re-charge. I was going to have a mechanic friend of mine do it but he flaked so I took it to a local shop....a/c vacuum and re-charge - easy....compressor regulator - broken. $225 later I was back on the road.

May 16, 2009: Wheelers for the Wounded Ride-Along

The next day Jason from Wheelers for the Wounded was in town for the Phoenix event. I'm glad I got my A/C fixed because it was super hot that day! We had a lot of fun getting out and running Seven Springs Trail north of Phoenix. Most everyone ended up camping out there but we had relatives in town so I had to head back home.
IMG_1562.JPG

Mechanical issues continue. While out on the WFTW ride I would occasionally hear this clanking noise coming from the rear wheel. It would happen totally randomly and I couldn't reproduce it when I tried to. The consensus over the CB was that it was the rear spring unloading. Ok no big deal. Then the truck started having some intermittent idling problems. Those turned into not wanting to start sometimes in the morning. It was suggested since I have the TRD oiled filter I clean out the MAF. Easy enough to do on my own, so after taking care of that problem I decided to crawl under the truck to see if I could find anything relating to the clanking noise from earlier. Long story short, the rear driver side axle bearing was toast....another $260 later I'm back on the road. Luckily it seems cleaning the MAF had taken care of the starting/idling issues.

And thanks to Sergio and the boys over at Baja Rack I have the first 3rd Gen rack! As with all their products, it totally kicks ***, was super easy to install and looks great!

If you have a 3rd Gen 4Runner, BUY ONE! :victory:

Heidi, hope you get all the mechanical gremlins fixed and out of the way, the 4Runner is coming along great, I especially like the new graphics and hood blackout.

Looking good Heidi. Love that carbon fiber laptop mount. We're still using Jodi's lap in the FJ!

Thank you! This one was done by a different company and it turned out MUCH BETTER than the last. Plus it just looks totally awesome!!

Oh no you guys still?! We are still using the RAM mount in the FJ and its really hung in there this last year. Great product...maybe one day you guys will have one! ;)

I still have some more updates, but I was ready to pass out at the keyboard last night and now I'm running off to a final job interview so I will finish up later this evening!

Oh no!!! The Nissan strap photo! HAHAHA! :sombrero:

You are making some serious progress on this rig! Very cool! You add something (or multiple things) every time I check this out. Keep it up, the truck is looking awesome and seems to be very functional.

Nice looking truck. Where did you get your hood blackout?

Safety note- be sure to cut the passenger side airbag off when the laptop is on the tray or the tray is in front of a passenger. This has become an issue with the increased use of laptops in our emergency services vehicles (LEO, ambulance, fire) and there are some crazy pics showing up on some of the forums.
