Finally getting around to some updates here! :violent-smiley-031:
April 23, 2009:
I was able to knock out a few quick projects in April just before the Overland Expo. It was going to be my first camping trip in the 4Runner so I wanted to be comfortable!
I liked where Tim (SOAZ) chose to mount his flashlight in the back for quick and easy access so I chose the same:
Obviously one of the greatest mods ever done to the FJ is the Engle fridge so I knew I had to have one in the 4Runner as well. At this point we figured there will probably never be a situation in which we will both need the fridge and not be together so for now we are sharing. I built this little platform in the back to mount the slide lock to and add some additional tie-down points:
I had also been thinking for a while on what I was going to do for a camping set-up, and had a few requirements I needed to fill. Since the FJ is pretty much beyond any kind of additional passenger space, the 4Runner needs to be reserved for those times when we need to carry more than 2 people. I thought about building a sleeping platform with a removable portion so I could still use the rear seats but I just didn't want to deal with the additional weight. I'm also just a
little too tall to sleep with an air mattress and the seats folded down, so I needed to find a way to still sleep back there, but be elevated above both the wheel-well and the rear seat bottoms. Then I found the Roll-A-Cot. The best of both worlds! I had Corbin at Zebra Sports cut an inch off the legs so I could have just a bit more headroom inside, and when I'm not using it it rolls up to a very packable size! Plus I still have the option of sleeping out under the stars next to the truck on those beautiful spring Arizona nights.
I'm sorry I didn't get a lot of pictures of the sleeping set-up when it was in use, so I'll have to take more on the next trip:
Next little thing was figuring out where to put the Lifehammer. Mock me if you will, but I think these things should be carried in every vehicle. You just never know when you will need one! I wanted to put it in a place that was accessible to both the driver and passenger, so I just stuck it to the inside top of my center console/arm-rest thingy. It wasn't sticking too well off road so I had to add those extra velcro 'latches'....ugly but it gets the job done.
So I like gadgets and had been looking at this little inclinometer for a while and finally picked it up. It works really well and is a great help in making sure I'm on level ground for sleeping in the truck if nothing else. Sorry for the horrible pic!
Finally I decided the little handheld Garmin Rino I had was great for Geocaching, but I really wanted a laptop mount in the truck. Corbin at Zebra Sports fabricated this awesome custom mount for the truck, which has everything I was looking for:
It mounts to the seat brackets
It has the double-arm allowing it to swing in almost any direction
Who doesn't want a carbon fiber plate that also moves?
