What are you preping for field day?

No luck busting any pile-ups today, but only had time to work about 2 hours mostly on 17m and 20m. I was operating 1B QRP /P SSB from our neighborhood park until the thunderboomers rolled in and I had to head home. I had lots of S8 and higher RX but just couldn't break through (for example K6AA and K6RH in L.A. said a few times that stations were S9+20). I had a contact or two as I rolled down, but they just didn't hold up against stronger stations. Back at it tomorrow from a different QTH with hopefully a lot less incident QRM.

FWIW, I have a FT-817ND w/ an Inrad 2KHz SSB (it is very narrow and sharp) filter that I was powering with a SLA battery through my Elecraft T1 ATU into a St. Louis Vertical. I develop a solid 5W with the SSB gain at max of 100 and this is generally alright normally, but this was the first time I tried this setup in a major contest. I know, I know, CW for QRP in contests. Working on it. Also need to finish my mic conditioner that should be good for +6dB even with the stock dynamic Yeasu mic (which sounds very good, just not a lot of punch).

We did fair to midland. I worked 20mtr phone station when the band finally opened up, Icom 7200 and a Transworld antenna. Sweet set-up, couldn't get the digital to function. time for the baseball bat.

Look for W6DOJ (CA. Dept. of Justice Radio Club) on the air field day. Three operators (K6ON, K6YN, K6XN). On the air from 5000' in the Sierra's near Blue Canyon, CA.

Operating 6 bands, CW & SSB off the grid on generator/solar/battery power.

One station will be on 40 meters continuously with the other two stations switching bands as conditions change.

Send a real QSL for one of our great cards.. We don't do EQSL..Sorry

See you in the pileup's..

I think I worked you on 40M yesterday. W6JUL, Julian, CA CERT group. My first active field day and it was fun.

W6DOJ Preliminary FD Contact Nmbers

Three of us up in the Sierra's having a great time on FD. Our location is off the grid so all op's are on emergency power. Murphy visited a few times so some of our operations were cut short, but still lots of fun.

Here is a couple of shots of our field day site. We had a nice sign out of the state highway. Had a few more non-participants show up this year.

Here is one of the SSB stations, We ran 3A, with 2 on SSB and one station on CW.

Another SSB station

and the CW stations, Nice tentec rig.

100_1339.jpg

The SSB antennas were dipoles or verticals mounted on fiberglass mast. Taks about 15 minutes to put up an antennas support and only takes a couple of people to put it up.

The CWstation had a couple short towers (1 and 2 sections) with wire antennas.

Had a good time but was done and packed up by 3pm (EST) and heading home.
