What Compass do you use.

Not that I am aware of but there is always someone somewhere that might have used one a cattle drive. I have seen pictures and drawings of sun compasses thought to have been used by the Vikings.
I suspect if I took one to a chuck wagon gathering, I would lose points for having a device that wasn't period correct.

Something like that would have been appropriate for a surveyor. They are handy in that they will indicate true north, no fussing with magnetic declination and are not affected by large bodies of iron ore.

I try to have a compass in each backpack I have one Cammenga, two Silva Rangers (the real ones) and a Recta baseplate model.

However one that I always have with me when I go out in the wilds is the compass on my Casio Pathfinder. It's basic but is is accurate.

Learned to use the Silva Ranger in the Canadian Forces Infantry

and still use one today ... I also use a romer for use on various map formats ,,,

x4 on the Cammenga Tritium compass, great for night work if you arent using a GPS.

I also have a Brunton copy of the Cammenga as a backup, as well as one of those generic flat type ones for map work.
