what do we like for compact, lightweight 1 man tents?

I know both have there place for sure I think if you read the hammock forums and maybe went to a local hang near you and see folks gear properly setup you could get a chance to check it out done properly and at least have that option to lay in some setups hammock folks are very nice about that kinda stuff and to see some other great gear many might not know about
setup porch mode cooking is easy and safe :) and you can just kick back and chill to me often one thing I loved about traveling is seeing what was around me all the time

since you mentioned older :) I can say now north of 50 I can wake up totally refreshed with no morning OH NO I have to stretch warm up wake up my bones feeling anymore out of my hammock and even with my NEMO pillow top pads which are some of the nicest and I also owned the exped mega mat to compare and they are so close ? but fact for me even with a small alps cot and nemo pad nothing is like a hammock when hung proper IMHO for getting a good nights sleep but the key is PROPER setup
last few trips with only hammocks I can not believe how great I feel waking up and my back has never been better :)

I still own 4 tents :) I love tents but our family also owns over 12 hammocks :)
I have never been a only one way to do thing kinda person but we all have preferences of what we like for sure :)

Kurt,

To give you some more information on a couple actual tents:

The MSR Hubba NX: One of the things I like about that tent is they symmetrical floor plan. It's a simple rectangle with a central peak. That means, anytime I pitch it, if the ground turns out to be sloped toe/head, I can just whip around head to toe and it's all good. The vestibule is also generously sized. The finishing details and quality of materials are also superb. I even like that the stuff sack is easy to use. All in all, an excellent tent of the highest quality. My only nit-picks, it's a tall tent and in really high winds, makes me a bit nervous. It catches a lot of wind on the back side.

Nemo Obi 1P/2P: Again, great materials and construction. The Jake's Feet are nice and allow the footprint to be permanently attached to the tent floor. I love the "light pocket" and the ventilation is super. The 2P is my favorite motorcycle tent as I can store my entire riding outfit plus boots and helmet in the one vestibule and enter/exit the other. That's my "luxury" one-person tent.

Big Agnes Seedhouse 1: Not one I particularly like and have since stopped using it. In fact - sold it last month. The front door sucked and climbing over my gear got old immediately. I also had some quality niggles. A few aspects of the construction seemed suspect. The Fly Creek at 1 pound 11 ounces had the same bummer front door, but at that weight it was acceptable. That tent feels like a huge bivy to me, not a bad thing, but I still prefer the MSR Hubba NX.

The Terra Nova is still my favorite - OUSIDE - of desert usage.

I really like my Big Agnes Copper Spur UL1. Big, solid and light for a 1 person; 22 sq. ft. vs 18 for Hubba; 2 lb. 8 oz. vs 2 lb. 14 for the Hubba; pack size 4.5 x 16.5 vs 6 x 18; $370 vs $350.

Nemo is nice but no longer made and more of a 4 season design, which may be useful.

If you're cost conscious, look at Sierra Trading. I picked up a Marmot Ajax 2 (called the Midguard 2) four season tent for $250. Their sales are a rolling crapshoot.
